ANNUAL REPORT
Report of the Board of Health
The appropriation of $5,336.24 for Health was suf- ficient. Expenditures were $4,548.97 thus leaving an unexpended balance of $787.27. This was primarily due to the smaller number of citizens committed to the Bristol County Tuberculosis Hospital. The Town's share of maintenance of this institution was however $7,720 .- 96, an increase of $1,544.19 over the 1946 assessment.
The Town owned ambulance has again been driven and serviced by volunteers of the Dighton Firemen's Association. Within the year 25 trips were made and 25 patients transported.
To the Firemen we again express our appreciations for their continued cooperation and conscientious ser- vices.
The other functions of the department have pro- ceeded in the normal manner and we trust, to the satis- faction of the citizens of the Town.
We express our appreciation to Mrs. Esther Bowden for her continued co-operation and efficiency in matters of this department.
Respectfully submitted, CLAYTON H. ATWOOD JOHN BOLGER GEORGE V. TINKHAM Board of Health.

ANNUAL REPORT
.
Report of Community Nurse
To the Board of Health:
Gentlemen:
I submit the following report for the year 1947:
My work for 1947 was carried on as in previous years. I made about 1,083 home calls, giving more bed- side care and treatments.
No new cases of Tuberculosis were reported. Patients were taken to various clinics and hospitals for check-ups and treatments, the Town Ambulance being used many times.
The Toxoid Clinic held in April was again well attended. Parents realize the value of these services offered as about 75% of the elementary school pupils were given a "booster" dose of toxoid. The Pre-school Clinic was held in June.
I attended Health Conferences in Boston, New Bedford and Taunton, and other meetings pertaining to my work.
I wish to express my appreciation and thanks to the Town organizations for their contributions at Thanks- giving and Christmas and for donations at other times. I also express my appreciation to the Town Officials for their continued help and cooperation.
Respectfully submitted,
ESTHER BOWDEN, R.N.

The Department fought three major fires this year. Two of these were during very bad weather, and this was, of course, very hard on the firemen.
On the other hand the weather helped much in keeping down the property loss.
The rain storm on the day of Gorden's garage fire had been preceded by a very dry windy spell and if the fire had happened during that time we feel sure that many buildings in the Somerset Avenue section would have caught fire. With our limited water supply we would have been powerless to do anything about it.
67
ANNUAL REPORT
The same thing was true of Sprague's mill fire which happened during a howling blizzard. The strong north wind was carrying large sparks and pieces of burn- ing wood nearly half a mile and these surely would have started other fires had we not had the snow to kill the sparks and flying embers.
During the summer, practice and training sessions, a large number of which were carried out under the direction of Assistant Chief Donald Hathaway, were held as often as twice a week.
We had to cancel our Fall program because of the long dry spell. We did not dare tie up apparatus for practice sessions.
Through the efforts of one of the officers of the department foam and foam applying equipment has been added this year without cost to the town.
Foam is used in fighting gasoline fires or any type fire on which a smothering agent is needed.
We of the Department all feel that because of the many bad fires we have had to fight, under all sorts of conditions, we have been most fortunate to have come through the year without any injuries to any of the members.
Respectfully yours,
WENDELL B. CAREY
Chief of Dighton Fire Department.
