Music in the High School

Our high school glee clubs continue to draw large num- bers of students. We are now preparing a program for an

115

ANNUAL REPORT

exchange assembly with Dartmouth High School in March. These assemblies afford an excellent opportunity for our music groups to perform before an "out of town" audience.

The high school band appeared at all the football games this year and presented a marching show between the halves. The band continues to improve musically as may be attested to by our excellent ratings at the Norwood Music Festival last May.

The appearance of twelve violins at our first orchestra rehearsal was an encouraging sight. As I stated in last year's report, my intention is to make our high school orchestra as outstanding as our band. The strength of our violin section will make this intention a real probability for this year. We are now preparing for our annual performance at the play contest later in the year.

Our smaller musical groups enjoyed a successful year. Perhaps outstanding among these was our boys quartet, which, in addition to making many appearances in neighboring com- munities, won first place in the First Annual Southeastern Massachusetts Schoolboys Barbershop Quartet Contest, held in New Bedford last May. The clarinet quartet has made many public appearances in the past year and it has done much to strengthen the woodwind sections in both the band and the orchestra. The girls' trio made a favorable rating at the Nor- wood Music Festival.

In conclusion, it only remains to be said that any success enjoyed by our music program is a reflection of the interest shown by all concerned: the School Committee, the Superin- tendent of Schools, the school Principals, teachers and custo- dians. Thank you for your cooperation and enthusiasm. May we continue to give the students of Dighton an interesting, challenging music program.

Respectfully submitted,

JOHN F. USHER, JR.,

Music Supervisor.
