REPORT OF TOWN HISTORY COMMITTEE.

Having completed the work assigned to us we are pleased to report that a creditable history of the town has been placed before the public. Quite naturally in such efforts the present may not regard the work as of much consequence but we are sanguine on

-44-

the thought that the future will appreciate it and that when the changes that are now in motion on our social and industrial life have had their effect this record of Carver through its earlier stages will stand as a credit to the public spirit of this genera- tion. We are glad to note that the book is read with satisfaction by many former residents of the town and that it is finding its way into the public libraries of the country.

The printing and illustrating was done by E. Anthony & Sons. New Bedford, and in confirmation of our judgment in selecting a printer we receive many compliments on the typographical make-up of the book and also on the artistic and significant design of the binding.

The chairman of your committee takes this opportunity of referring to other work in this line on which he has hitherto received no credit. The State has published the vital records of the town up to 1850 and this publication may now be found in the public libraries of the State which affords easy access to our earlier records. This publication was made from a copy of our early records furnished by your chairman with additions from the cemetery inscriptions and from private records. and as the copy was verified by a representative of the New England His- toric-Genealogical Society, it stands as an authoritive copy of the records.

There are yet two matters that should be considered before our records may be said to be easily accessible. Our record of cemetery inscriptions should be indexed or arranged in alpha- betical order ; and our volumes of town records which are com- plete should be indexed. To continue this work we suggest that the balance in the Town History account be left to draw against for this purpose.

We also call the attention of the public to the fact that there are a few valuable records in private custody the safety of which should be felt as a public responsibility. And as we are to have a fireproof vault with ample room we suggest that the custod-

ians of these records be furnished with a drawer in which, while the books would still be in the custody of their owners they would be safely preserved.

REPORT OF FOREST WARDEN.

By means of the appropriation made at the annual town meet- ing, fire-fighting apparatus has been placed at the homes of the following men with the hope that by so doing it will be possible to reach either a forest or a building fire in any section of the town more quickly than heretofore, and with the best means of checking the same.

-59-

At Herbert F. Atwood's, a wagon with 10 extinguishers.

At George H. Powers, a wagon, with 10 extinguishers.

At Alton H. Griffith's, a wagon with 10 extinguishers.

At Gustavus Atwood's, 6 extinguishers. At Jesse A. Holmes', 6 extinguishers. At Henry M. Peckham's 6 extinguishers.

Many acres of valuable timber and some houses have already been saved by their use.

The look-out at Plymouth Fire Tower, which was built by the town of Plymouth and is maintained by the State, has been of inestimable value to us, as a means of quickly locating fires.

The state earnestly desires that we consider the advisability of uniting with our other adjoining towns in the erection of a similar tower to be located in the town of Middleboro and which would also be maintained by the state.
