As the three items in the above auto truck account, show- ing the amounts paid for a truck chassis, gasoline and supplies, are not sufficient to make plain the present standing of the same, the following explanation and figures are given :
One year ago through the efforts of Herbert F. Atwood, local Moth Superintendent, the State Forestry Department agreed to give to the Town of Carver, a properly equipped Ford truck for the use of the local Moth Department, provided the town would first pay for it, and later receive reimbursement for the same by means of charges to the State. for the use of the truck, at the same rate per day as if hired from some individual.
The proposition was brought before the town at the annual March meeting. where it was voted to accept the gift from the State, and the sum of $550 was appropriated for the pur- pose of affecting the same.
On further consideration of the matter with the Maxim Motor Company of Middleboro. it was found that the amount appropriated would be insufficient to carry out the wishes of the town, and agreement was made with them to furnish a thoroughly equipped truck for $800, and on payment of $500 from the appropriation to cover the first cost of the machine, they delivered the same complete to the Town, the balance of $300 for equipment to be paid in the same way, the State had agreed to reimbuse the town.
The earnings of the truck charged to the Moth, Highway and Fire accounts, and paid to the Maxim Motor Company, from

said accounts have finished paying the equipment bill in full, and the truck is ours.
Before and since paying the Maxim Motor Company in full, the trucks earnings on the Moth Account have been charged to the State to the amount of about $400, and this will be continued until the full sum of $800, which the town has paid out, has been paid back to us.

Chester W. Humphrey, who for eighteen successful years has served the towns in our District as Superintendent of Schools,
-63-
resigned on Nov. 1 to take up similar work for the town of Wareham. Those who know him best will miss him most.
From the beginning of his service among us to its close, he has been the personification of neatness, courtesy and thrift, and his genial manner and helpful attitude coupled with a good measure of common sense have ever been appreciated.
Your committee miss his wise council, ready assistance and pleasant smile; and many successful teachers owe much to one who is able to criticise so it will not hurt, and to suggest in the way he would like to have suggestions made to him.
He is most favorably known to the Massachusetts State Board of Education, and to the authorities and teachers of the State Normal School at Bridgewater, as well as to authorities and institutions of like standing elsewhere.
