The year past has been a very active one in the law depart- ment.

Besides having many other legal matters of lesser import to deal with, this board has been obliged to defend three suits which have been instituted against the town.

The case of Edward E. Howes was settled at an expense of about $150.00 all around to the town. This settlement was deemed advisable as we could not get out of it for a considerable larger sum, assuming we took our case in court. The Selectmen paid Mr. Howes through his counsel, Mr. Bassett, the sum of eighty dollars. The balance of the expense to Harwich in this case can be gleaned from Law Suit account of this report.

The case of Town of Cohasset vs. Harwich, has been switched off by this board. Cohasset at present is forcing a suit against the City of Boston on the same ground and for the same cause of action. In the mean time her suit against this town remains on file.

Walker vs. Harwich is before you in the annual warrant for your action.

We herein conclude our Annual Report of the Town of Harwich for the year ending December 31, 1906.

Respectfully submitted, JOHN H. DRUM, CLENRIC H. CAHOON, AMBROSE N. DOANE, Selectmen of Harwich.
