WEST CAMBRIDGE, July 1847. DANIEL CLARK, EDWIN LOCKE, Assessor's.
DAVIS LOCKE,
REPORT
OF
THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE,
WEST CAMBRIDGE,
FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR 1846 -- 47.
The period under review, has been one of remarkable health in our schools, for which we have reason to be devoutly thank- ful. Very few cases of death have occurred, and compara- tively few of alarming illness. The attendance has been, to say the least, as good as usual, and the improvement collec- tively matter of general satisfaction. Most of the teachers who were formerly in office have been retained, and none have been discharged except at their own request.
The Union School, in both departments, has been un- der the same instruction as during the year previous, except
22
that through tire Winter Term Mr. Brown had the valuable as- sistance of Miss A. A. Fowle.
In the North West District, the Grammar School has con- tinued in the care of its former Teacher ; while in the Primary Department, on account of the sickness of its estimable Teach- er, there has been a change, transferring the charge of that school to Miss S. G. Brown.
The Grammar School and the Primary School, in the South District, have severally remained under their former in- struction, each attended, it is believed, by an increasing num- ber of Pupils.
In the Wyman District, the School has been taught, in its several Terms successively, by Miss Symmes, and Miss Har- dy and Mr. Lincoln.
The examinations of these various Schools at the close of the year, were generally attended by goodly numbers of friends whose appearance indicated great interest in the exercises which they had the opportunity to witness. Several gentlemen favored some of these scenes with their addresses, offering not only commendatory remarks, but giving good counsel to our youthful population. The prominence thus given to moral in- fluence and moral principles, as essential to early education, we trust will be remembered by all parties who were present. What can be more desirable, than that our Schools should be nurseries of virtue, as well as of intelligence, training up a geu- eration to excellence of spirit and deportment? Let our children
23
be taught to abhor that which is evil in speech and in practice, and to cherish whatever is pure, and lovely and of good report, in character and in conduct. Thus while their minds are dis- ciplined to useful action, and stored with the seeds of valuable learning, let their hearts no less be receiving impressions which. will be conducive to goodness in all subsequent life.
The expenditures for the year has been as follows. For salaries of teachers $ 2129 25 For fuel, furniture, and repairs, as reported by the Prudential Committee, 320 53 : - -
Total, - $ 2449 78
It is matter of gratulation that the Town maintains a stand- ing so respectable in this particular among the 309 Towns in the Commonwealth.
