REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON THE OLD CEMETERY.
The Committee have expended during the year 1870 one hundred and thirty-nine dollars and twenty-five cents in the following manner :
All the avenues and walks have been covered with a good dressing of blue gravel, and done in such a manner as will render a renewal of a similar expenditure unneces- sary for several years to come.
A large number of evergreen trees were carefully plant- ed, but under the influence of the unparalleled drought of the past season, many of these trees have died. Those remaining have been pruned and otherwise properly cared for, and are in a thriving condition. This little spot oc- cupies a very prominent place in the early history of our country, and it is desirable that it should be kept in a state of preservation creditable to the inhabitants of the Town and their patriotic ancestors. The Committee pre- suming that this opinion is in harmony with that of every other citizen, would recommend a small appropriation sufficient to replace the trees affected by the drought, and to keep the walks and avenues in order. Historical writers and others, interested in all that is connected with the period of the Revolution, often come to this " ancient

burial place " to seek for information that may exist upon the head-stones here erected. The Committee would, therefore, suggest the propriety of resetting and cleaning some of the ancient memorials which are so covered with moss, that it has become very difficult, if not impossible, to read the inscription upon them. Many of these stones mark the spot where repose the sacred remains of our oldest and most respected citizens, whose relatives are either dead or not in condition to meet the necessary ex- pense, and as this would be very small in amount, your Committee think that the Town can afford to bestow this simple act of justice upon the memory of those whose lives were a blessing to the community among whom they lived and died.
All of which is respectfully submitted by your Com- mittee.
BENJAMIN POLAND, J. S. POTTER.
REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE FOR THE SUPPLY OF PURE WATER.
The Committee appointed at the last Annual Town Meeting to procure plans and specifications for the sup- ply of Water for the Town, ask leave to make the follow- ing partial Report :
They have procured plans and specifications for pump- ing water from Spy Pond into a Reservoir, to a height of about 150 feet above the surface of the Pond ; but the ex- pense would be so large, your Committee thought it inex- pedient to recommend the adoption of this plan; your Committee then opened communications with parties who have adopted other plans for supplying Towns and Cities with water, and have come to the conclusion that the Holly principle is the best, cheapest and most efficient, unless you can obtain a supply by gravity, which is the cheapest and best in all cases, where you have a sufficient head to give pressure enough for all purposes, fires in- cluded. The Holly principle, which is operating with perfect satisfaction in Western New York, nearly all the Western and some of the Southern States, is operated without the large expense of reservoir or stand pipe, but pump direct from the Pond or Lake into the main pipes ; in case of fire, the water may be raised and thrown with

great force to a great height by attaching hose to the hy- drants, throwing as many streams as might be required with much more effect than the best Steam Fire Engines, thus doing away with the Fire Department, except suffi- cient force to manage the hose.
Your Committee regret that they are not prepared to make a full report of the expense of introducing a supply of Water for the Town by the Holly principle, for publi- cation at this time, in consequence of one of the parties preparing estimates being absent from the State, and will not return in season, but the Committee will be prepared at the Annual March meeting to lay before the Town va- rious plans, with estimates of costs and other expenses ; in the meantime your Committee would invite all who feel an interest to examine the recommendations and certificates in the Town Clerk's Office, from Mayors of Cities, Engi- neers and Underwriters, who have tested the Holly prin- ciple for the supply of Water to Cities and Towns.
Respectfully submitted by your Committee,
BENJ. POLAND. DAVID FISHER.
RUSSELL PARK.
The Committee beg leave to submit the following as their Annual Report :
The work has been prosecuted with complete success, but to make it an ornament to the Town and a lasting memorial of the liberality of our late Townsman, the Committee found that more work was required than was contemplated in the outset. The work the past season has included the setting of heavy granite posts at the principal entrance, and granite steps opposite the cross paths, the erection of a fence on the south side ; also, the displacement of almost the entire surface loam, together with the filling of a large amount of gravel for walks and for bringing almost the entire surface to the requisite grade.
The sum expended has slightly exceeded the appropria- tion, and the Committee recommend that an additional sum of seven hundred dollars be appropriated for settling the deficiency, setting out trees, grassing the lawns, and thoroughly completing the work.
J. W. PEIRCE, GEO. C. RUSSELL, J. F. HOBBS, JOHN OSBORN, JESSE BACON.
