ARLINGTON TOWN REPORT

REPORT OF THE BACTERIOLOGIST AND PHYSICIAN TO THE BOARD OF HEALTH.

Board of Health, Arlington, Mass.

Gentlemen: I have the honor to submit my report as Bacteriolo- gist and Physician to the Board of Health covering the period from July 1, 1914 to December 31, 1914.

It has been quite easy to continue the work so ably organized and systematized by Dr. Champion. The routine bacteriological work has been continued and many other examinations outside the regular work have gladly been made. Two sub-stations for distributing specimen material have been started, one at the Angus Pharmacy at East Arlington, and one at the Emus Pharmacy at Arlington Heights.

The following table shows the number of examinations during the period covered by this report.

In pursuance of the duties of Physician to the Board of Health I have first, investigated all the reported cases of tuberculosis in the Town and in conjunction with the Clerk, Mr. Robinson, placed all those in Sanataria possible. All cases of scarlet fever are seen before discharge and the record culture necessary for the release of cases of diphtheria is taken by me. Investigation into questionable quarantine is carried out and other duties along this line are undertaken with the idea of enforcing and teaching the importance of public health measures.

Respectfully submitted,

EZEKIEL PRATT, M.D.,

Bacteriologist and Physician to the Board of Health.

ARLINGTON TOWN REPORT

REPORT OF INSPECTOR OF MILK.

To the Board of Health, Arlington, Mass.

Gentlemen: I herein submit my annual report as Milk Inspector for the year ending December 31, 1914.

The milk supply of the Town is derived from about five thousand dairies from all the New England States, New York, and some of our cream even from Canada. Our supply of freshest milk comes from about ninety local dairies and is handled by our local dealers, the milk coming from longer distances being handled by the larger companies such as the H. P. Hood Company and the D. Whiting and Sons.

I have licensed eighty-two dealers to sell milk in Arlington and have turned over forty-one ($41.00) dollars to the Collector in license fees.

During the year a new set of Milk Regulations has been adopted to govern the handling of milk in the Town. There has been special apparatus installed for the detection of streptococci and pus in milk and by this means milk which to the eye may look perfectly good may be proven to be unsafe for food.

I have examined a large number of samples for standard, adulter- ation and the presence of harmful bacteria. One dealer has been prosecuted for the sale of milk adulterated by the addition of water.

On the whole, in my opinion, Arlington has a very good supply of milk handled by dealers who are constantly trying to improve their methods.

Respectfully submitted,

LAURENCE L. PEIRCE, M.D.V.,

Inspector of Milk.

REPORT OF COMMISSIONERS OF CEMETERIES, ROBBINS FUND, SOLDIERS' MONUMENT FUND AND SAMUEL G. BUCKNAM FUND.

ARLINGTON, February 1, 1915.

The Commissioners of Cemeteries, Soldiers' Monument Fund, Robbins Fund and Samuel C. Bucknam Fund herewith submit their report for the year ending December 31, 1914.

The large increase in the number of lots and single graves sold during the year will probably necessitate more help and consequently a larger appropriation to properly care for the cemetery ..

During the year, as will be seen from the tables annexed, 24 lots and 45 single graves were sold, and the sum of $2525 turned into the Town Treasury and made available by transfer to other accounts. With the appropriation last year of only $1760 it will be seen that the care of the cemetery is not only not a tax on the citizens of the Town, but a source of revenue, $765 being paid back over the amount appropriated.
