REPORT OF THE DIRECTORS OF THE FRANKLIN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION.
At the annual meeting of the Association, the Treasurer's report showed a balance of-

Received of Librarian, fines, cards and catalogues, 43 15
Town, 400 00
Total, $520 89
Expenditures as follows :
Paid Librarian's salary,
$150 00
Rent of Library room.
100 00
Incidental expenses,
201 75
$451 75
Balance on hand, $69 14
The Directors have purchased during the year, 166 vol- umes, at a cost of $187 77. Total additions to the Library, for the year, by purchase and donation, 217 volumes. Whole number now on catalogue for circulation, 3,000.
From the report of the Librarian, we find the whole num- ber drawing books in the course of the year was 655. Num- ber of volumes loaned, 12,785.
The increase of the library work and its patronage by the public has been quite uniform the past eight years. In that
40
time the number of books has nearly, or quite. doubled, so that the present room is becoming crowded, and the directors feel the necessity of securing additional room for the accom- modation of the public, and also for additional book cases, the present cases in use being crowded to their full capacity. A change for this purpose will increase the current expenses somewhat, but the directors would suggest that the sum of $500 be appropriated for the current year.
For Directors, JOSEPH G. RAY, GEO. W. WIGGIN, WALDO DANIELS.
Franklin, Feb. 16, 1883.
REPORT OF CHIEF ENGINEER.
Your Chief Engineer would respectfully submit the following report :-
The fires for the past year have, fortunately, been small in number, resulting in but comparatively little loss of property. Your fire department has, in all cases, responded promptly, and rendered timely aid, although, happily no protracted ser- vice has been required. Your fire department, at present, consists of Chief Engineer and six assistant engineers ; three engine companies ; one hook and ladder company ; one fire company, having in charge hose carriage and appurtenances. The apparatus of the fire department is in fair condition 'and remains the same as at last report excepting some three hun- dred feet of hose condemned during the year as useless. Your engineer would suggest an appropriation of three hundred dollars for new hose. For other appropriations of fire de- partment would refer to recommendation of your Selectmen.
Your engineer would most earnestly call the attention of the citizens of the Town to the necessity of taking some ac- tion in regard to a better supply of water for general protec- tion of property in case of fire.
WILLIAM F. RAY, Chief Engineer. Franklin, Mass., Feb. 15, 1883.
