Report of Park Commissioners.

The small lot of land, known as Central Park, is open for use of the public, and especially for children as a play ground. The Commissioners would be glad to furnish any- thing necessary for general recreation, so that children might feel a safe and pleasant welcome there.

The park has been kept in general care during the past year at but little cost.

We may need to expend a little more the coming year and so ask for the same amount of appropriation as of last year, viz., twenty-five dollars, which will probably be all we shall need.

GEORGE K. KNOWLTON, FRANCIS C. NORTON, Park Commissioners.

(40)

Report of Cemetery Commissioners.

In presenting our report this year, we have to say that we have used all the appropriation allowed us last year, and were obliged to draw on the surplus interest of the Zerviah B. Dane fund for some of the improvements made in the cemetery.

The rear wall of several of the tombs which projected into the main avenue has been rebuilt on a straight line, making a decided improvement to the avenue.

Aside from the general work in the yard quite an amount of work has been done on avenues.

Greenwood and Linden avenues have been extended from Grove avenue to Oak avenue, the soil has been removed and a light coat of gravel put on.

As this will get well settled during the winter it is im- portant to put on a good coat of binding gravel this spring.

This will open up a full section of the one hundred and fifty dollar lots.

A section in the southeastern part of the new ground has been sold this year. This is a section which is in wood land and is broken on its eastern end by an angle of the boundary line.

But it can be made, at some expense, a beautiful section, and no doubt it will be, as it is the resting place of our hon- ored and beloved townsman, the late George V. L. Meyer.

We hope to have an appropriation of five hundred dol- lars to complete the work that needs to be done this year in the cemetery.

GEORGE K. KNOWLTON, FRANCIS C. NORTON, GEORGE H. GIBNEY, Cemetery Commissioners.

CLARENCE S. KNOWLTON,

Town Clerk ..

Report of the Trustees of the Public Library for 1918.

Your Trustees believe the past year has been one of the most important and productive in the work of the Public Library in recent years. The attendance and interest re- corded in the main Library have exceeded any in the past, and at the South Hamilton Branch Reading Room some two hundred new regular readers have been enrolled.

The establishment of the Branch Reading Room has proved gratifying beyond expectation. Heretofore the li- brary facilities in perhaps the most populous part of the town were only such as were afforded by keeping some two hun- dred volumes at the store of O. J. Kimball, with no oppor- tunity for adequate supervision as to the issuance of the books. These books were changed some three times a year, providing a scope of reading limited to less than one thou- sand volumes a year,

Through a special appropriation of $500 this year, the Reading Room, located on Railroad avenue, was opened. The walls are painted a soft green with cherry dado, and the electric fixtures, light oak furniture, shelving and other fur- nishings, are of the latest design. Beautiful carbon repro- ductions of "Reading from Homer" and "The Roman Forum," adorn the walls.

The Reading Room is open two afternoons and evenings. every week, alternating with afternoons and evenings at the main Library, with our Librarian always in attendance and ready to direct and advise our younger readers as to the most desirable books for reading or consultation.

(48)

49

TOWN REPORT.

At least one thousand books are on hand at all times, and by constant replacing from the main Library the yearly range of reading is increased to some three thousand vol- umes. All the popular magazines of the day and the daily papers are also to be found on the tables.

The general interest shown is most gratifying, and dem- onstrates the wisdom of having established the Reading Room. Tables crowded with boys and girls deeply engrossed in research work or reading the literary and scientific maga- zines is a common occurrence of an evening.

As to the statistics relating to the new books, purchases, gifts received, the large inrease in regular readers, and other similar matters, we refer to the Librarian's report for details.

Respectfully submitted, ROBERT B. WALSH, FRANCIS C. NORTON, ARTHUR W. CHANDLER,

Trustees.

Librarian's Report.

To the Trustees of the Public Library

Gentlemen :- My third annual report is herewith sub- mitted.

The record of 1918 shows a steady increase in the circu- lation of books in the Library, especially since the new South Branch has been started. Two hundred new names have been added, and during the summer months the circulation

50

TOWN REPORT.

was 500 books per week and in the winter from 375 to 400. The yearly output of books has now reached over twenty thousand.

This year three hundred and seventy new books have been added to our Catalog. A large proportion of these are books for young girls and boys and have been placed in the South Branch where there is so much demand for them. About nine hundred books in all have been put into the Branch Library and fifteen magazines on the Reading Table. Last summer we received a very large gift of books from Mrs. Codman, and have also received books from Miss Ella Rankins, Miss Marjorie Thomas, Mr. Willard C. Ware and Mr. George Lockhart Allen of Salem.

Twenty-five dollars, fine money, has been paid to the Town Treasurer.

The Library is open on Wednesday and Saturday after- noons from 3 to 5 and on Saturday evenings from 7 to 9 o'clock.

The South Branch is open on Tuesday and Friday af- ternoon and evening from 3 to 9 o'clock.

Respectfully, ANNIE S. PRESTON,

Librarian.
