SELECTMEN'S REPORT.
On the preceding pages the Selectmen present their report of the dis- bursements in the various departments during the year ; which we think are given in detail sufficiently to show the manner in which the money has been expended.
The expenses have in most cases been kept within the appropriations.
The amount ($1500) appropriated for salaries of town officers, was not sufficient to pay them for the time they were obliged to spend to do the work required of them.
The appropriation for night watchman was expended before the clos- ing of the year. but we thought it for the best interest of the town to keep one employed until the annual meeting of the Town.
During the months of September and October, the streets outside the village were not lighted, which enabled us to keep within the apppropri- ation, although it was considerably reduced from the previous year.
Summer Avenue has been completed, and with the amount overdrawn last year, paid from the money received of the County.
On account of the reduced appropriation for the repairs of highways, and the damaging rains of last summer, for the safety of travel we were compelled to have extra work done. and employed the keeper of the almshouse, leaving a balance due that department. and also find the streets are not in as good repair as a year ago.
We have during the year fitted a room in the basement of the town building, at a cost of fifty dollars, for the accommodation of tramps, thereby greatly reducing the expense and trouble of caring for them.
From the experience of the work of the past year, we present for your consideration the following list of appropriations :

The accounts of the Selectmen, Treasurer, and Collector have been examined and found correct.
The balance of cash in hand, as stated by the Treasurer, $6,387.72, is correct ; and the trust funds and appropriations for town debt are in bank.
The first note of the town coming due, is for $6,000, payable July 27th, 1887. We now have on hand, appropriated towards the pay. ment of the debt, $3,918 00; and with the usual appropriations toward this object for this year and next, we shall be ready to pay this note when due-and a part of the next one, which comes due August 9th, 1887, for $4,500 00.
We would suggest that the land in rear of the engine house does not appear to be needed for any uses of the town, and might probably be wanted for a building lot; and that therefore the Selectmen might be authorized to sell the same when a suitable price is offered, and apply the proceeds to the payment of the debt.

Report of the Board of Engineers.
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen of the Town of Reading :
The Engineers of the Fire Department make their report.
During the past year the department has responded to five (5) alarms.
1885. April 1. 3.50 A. M. Unoccupied building of Lawrence Duly. Loss, $300; insurance, $300; insurance received, $275. Incendiary.
1885. July 4. 3.00 P. M. House of O. W. Austin. No damage. Fire crackers.
1885. July 6. 2.00 A. M. Mrs. C. A. Brown's house and barn. Loss, $1500 ; insurance, $1800 ; insurance received, $1115. Occupied by J. W. Crowell. Loss, $1500 ; insurance, $1500 ; insurance received, $1100. In- cendiary.
1885. Oct. 9. 6.30 P. M. Jacob Jones' unoccupied barn. Loss, $200 ; insurance, none. Tramps.
1886. Jan. 23. 2.45 p. M. Wm. Proctor's store and varnish room. Loss, building, $300; stock and fixtures, $1200 ;- ($1500) ; insurance, $800; insurance received, $750. Over-heated oven.
We think that the citizens have reason to feel grateful for the com- paratively small loss of property by fire during the past year.
The only change in the apparatus since the last report has been the purchase of twelve (12) feet of rubber suction hose for the Hancock engine. The department now owns two thousand feet of new hose, and about two thousand feet of old leather hose, mostly in fair condition. The steamer and hook and ladder house is in good condition ; the house of Hancock No. 2, will need a small outlay ; the house of Eagle, No.
42
4, will soon require extensive repairs to be of any use to the town ; but as the engine has been removed to the basement of the steamer house, the Engineers recommend the sale of the house, and the appropriation of as much of the money as may be needed to arch the cisterns now under the Eagle house. We recommend that the Engineers be authorized to sell the Eagle engine, if they can do so to the advantage of the town.
The Engineers think that there are several places where there is urgent need of cisterns, to ensure a sufficient supply of water in case of fire, and recommend that an appropriation of $650 be made to build the same. They also recommend that a driven well be sunk on the plain, west of the depot, at a cost of $200.
It is the opinion of the Board inat twenty-five hundred dollars should be appropriated to meet the expenses of the department for the ensuing year.
