JAMES REID, Town Clerk.

SELECTMEN'S GENERAL REPORT.

FOR FISCAL YEAR OF 1900-ENDING DEC. 31st.

To the Inhabitants of the Town of Reading:

In compliance with the By-Laws we submit herewith our report for the year ending Dec. 31st, 1900:

Speaking collectively :- We have endeavored to carry out the wishes of the citizens of the town, as expressed by their votes at the last annual meeting, in referring matters to this Board for special consideration or action.

We take this opportunity to call your attention to the fact that the expenses of the several departments are increasing each year, and we believe it our duty at this time to caution the citizens and heads of departments against advocating any increase in the ap- propriations unless found to be absolutely necessary for the needs and conduct of the business of the town.

STREET DEPARTMENT.

This department, the most important and the appropriation for which is the largest of any under our immediate charge, has demanded a large share of our attention.

The mild weather and absence of snow carried the highway work into December, rendering an increase in the expenditure on account of this department necessary, to meet which we made- draft upon the Street Railway Tax fund sufficient to cover said

20

The foregoing are a few of the many matters which have demanded our attention the past year; but for further information, in detail, we invite your perusal of the financial statements pertain- ing to the various appropriations, which follow.

Detailed statements of the finances of the several departments are presented on the succeeding pages; they have been carefully compiled and accurately transcribed. We submit them for your approval.

We recommend the following appropriations for the year:

REPORT OF THE SEALER OF WEIGHTS AND MEASURES FOR THE YEAR 1900.

To the Honorable Board of Selectmen:

GENTLEMEN :- I would recommend that the salary of the Sealer be $75 for the coming year.

The work will be harder, and a great deal more of it than ever before. Other towns have gone to great expense fitting up a room for the Sealer. It has cost this town nothing the past year for a place for the Sealer to do his work.

I think when the people of the town become aware how much the Sealer has to do, and the time it requires, they will realize the stated salary is none too large.

Respectfully yours,

FRANK W. PARKER.
