OLD UNION STREET CEMETERY INSCRIPTIONS WEST SPRINGFIELD, MASS.

Contributed by WALTER E. CORBIN of Florence, Mass.

The following records, taken from the gravestones in the Union Street Cemetery, West Springfield, Mass., will add, correct and clear up some of the doubtful entries listed in the printed vital records of West Springfield.

The old stones are of red sandstone, some badly weathered and rather difficult to decipher. The differences in the vital records have been carefully compared with the stones.

This cemetery was created through the efforts of Edward Foster and wife Sarah of Springfield, Mass., who, to accommodate the inhabitants living on the west side of the "Great river" in Spring- field, with a convenient burial place, acquired deed to a certain parcel of land lying on the west side of the river, which deed was recorded in Hampshire County Deeds in Springfield, Book B, p. 221, 9 April 1711, now known as the Union Street Cemetery.
