NOTES ON THE FAMILY

OF

DEA. EDWARD CONVERS.

FIRST GENERATION.

1.

Dea. Edward Convers,1 born (as is supposed) Jan. 30, 1590, died Aug. 10, 1663. He may have married in England, Jane Clarke, who, in that case, probably died before 1617. He married as early as 1617, in England, Sarah , who died Jan. 14, 1662. He came in the fleet with Winthrop in 1630, and settled in Charlestown. He took a prominent part in the settle- ment of Woburn in 1640, and in that year erected the first dwelling house within the then limits of Woburn. There seems little doubt that it occupied very nearly the site of the old house now owned by Abijah and Stephen Thompson on the east side of Main street in Winchester, a few feet west of the Aberjona River. Shortly after, he erected the Convers Mill near his house. See Winchester Record, Vol. I., pp. 223, 242, 249, 259 : also an article by the present writer in the Winchester Star for July 5, 1890. Dea. Convers married again, Sept. 9, 1662, Joanna (Corbin) Sprague, widow of Ralph Sprague ; slie died Feb. 24, 1680. His children were :

+2. (Dea.) Josiah,2 b. 1617; d. Feb. 3, 1690. 13. (Lieut. ) James,2 b. 1620; d May 10, 1715.

4. Mary,2 b. about 1622; m., first, Dec. 19, 1643, Simon Thompson, second son of James Thompson; he died May, 1658; by him she had two sons and four daughters, but only one son and one daughter are known to have reached maturity; second, Feb. 1, 1659, John Sheldon of Billerica, who died May 24, 1690; by him she had a son, John Sheldon, Jr., b. 1660; m., Nov. 20, 1690, Deborah Hill (daughter of Ralph). Ile died Aug. 27, 1724, and his widow died Jan. 11, 1730; they had : John, Mary, Samuel, Deborah and Hannah.

15. (Sergt.) Samuel,2 b. in Charlestown, baptized March 12, 1638; killed Feb. 20, 1669, by an accident in the Convers Mill.

The family of Allen Convers ( mentioned in the will of Dea. Edward Con- vers I as " my kinsman") is to be carefully distinguished from the subject of the foregoing sketch. The same names occur in both families, a circum- stance which has been a frequent source of error ; and several names occi ring in the Woburn records are to be referred to the family of Allen Convers

He was at Salem, Mass. in 1639, and at Woburn in 1642, where he taught school in 1676. He died of small-pox, April 19, 1679. His wife Sarıh died three days after her husband, probably of the same disease. They had : Zachariah, Elizabeth, Sarah, Joseph, Mary, Theophilus, Samuel, Mary (20), and Hannah, apparently all born in Woburn. But though his immediate far ily was thus numerous, his race is perhaps now extinct.

The foregoing notes have been to a considerable degree compiled from original sources of information, though with such help as could be obtained from other works upon the subject. I desire especially to acknowledge 1.y indebtedness for much valuable information derived from the history of the Convers family, compiled by William G. Hill, Esq., whose manuscript I wa. permitted to see before its publication.

In regard to the ancient mode of dating, known as Old Style, I have fol- lowed the method understood to have been followed by the editor of these volumes, so that the date Feb. 27, 1709-10 has been here written Feb. 27, 1710, and other dates in like manner.
