WOBURN RECORD OF BIRTHS.

EXTRACT FROM A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF WOBURN.

BY WILLIAM R. CUTTER.

GENEALOGY. - A number of genealogical works relating to Woburn have been published, and these are useful for the information they con- tain concerning matters connected with the place, and for mention made of individual citizens. In addition to the genealogical notices furnished in Sewall's History, pp. 592-657, may be cited a number of publications.

On the four most numerous families in Woburn have appeared : -

1. Richardson, a large volume, by John A. Vinton (Port., 1876).

2. Wyman, N. E. Hist. Gen. Reg. III., 33, etc., - partly in print and mostly in manuscript; and in preparation still, when its author, Thomas B. Wyman, of Charlestown, died, in 1878. The manuscript is still in the possession of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, 18 Somer- set Street, Boston, to whom it was given.

3. Johnson, a contribution by John A. Boutelle, and published at the end of the introduction of Poole's edition of Johnson's Wonder-working Providence (Andover, 1867).

4. Reed, a volume, by Jacob W. Reed (Bost., 1861) ; particularly Chap. IV. of the work.

Other published genealogies of Woburn families which have appeared as volumes or pamphlets have been the following, the place and date of publication being given : -

Locke, by John G. Locke, Bost., 1853; Gardner, by William W. Green- ough, Bost., 1858; Cragin, by Charles H. Cragin, Wash., 1860; Cleveland, by Horace G. Cleveland, Chic., 1879; Cleveland (another), by James B. Cleveland, Albany, 1881 ; Cleveland (another), by Edmund J. Cleveland, in preparation, 1886; Pierce, by Frederick C. Pierce, Worc., 1880; Pierce (another), by Frederick B. Pierce and Frederick C. Pierce, Worc., 1882; Pierce (another), by Frederick C. Pierce, supposed to be still in prepara- tion, 1889; Learned, by William L. Learned, Albany, 1882; Thompson, by Leander Thompson, Bost., 1887; Converse, by William G. Hill, Malden, 1887 ; Carter, in N. E. Ilist. Gen. Reg. XVII., 51, 52; Carter (another), by Clara A. Carter and Sarah A. XXXIX., 17, by the present writer ; Fuller, in N. E. Hist. Gen. Reg. XIII., 351; Brooks, ibid. XXIX., 153, and Wright, ibid. XXXVII., 76, both by the present writer; Simonds, by Edward F. WOBURN RECORD OF BIRTHS.

In addition to the above, Mr. H. G. Cleveland has published an article on the Clevelands in England, N. E. Hist. Gen. Reg. XXXIX., 212, and two pamphlets on the Clevelands, 1885. A revision of the Reed and Winn genealogy in J. W. Reed's Reed Family was published by Miss M. W. Carleton, Woburn, 1883.

Genealogies in preparation, in 1889, in addition to those already men- tioned, are Burbeen and Walker, by Joseph B. Walker, Concord, N. H .; Fowle by John Warren Johnson, Woburn; Tidd, by Edward F. Johnson, Woburn .*

Notices might be added of such productions as that of the Brush or Bruce family in the Upton Genealogy, by John A. Vinton, 1874; and the Winn family in J. W. Reed's Reed Family, and in the Cleveland Genealogies. Attention is called to Savage's Genealogical Dictionary and Durrie's Index, 1886; also to John A. Vinton's Vinton Memorial, Bost., 1858, and the same author's Symmes Memorial, Bost., 1873.

Three other volumes, at least. of family history, inclusive of genealogy, have been written in Woburn, and published by residents, viz. : Whipple Family, Lowell, 1857, and Burke and Alvord Families, Bost., 1864, both by John A. Boutelle ; and the Cutter Family, of New England, by William R. Cutter, Bost., 1871-75.

Two of our local genealogists, both of good fame, are deceased. For obituary notice of John A. Vinton, a resident of Winchester, see N. E. Hist. Gen. Reg., XXXIV. (1880), 127-31 ; and for an obituary notice of John A. Boutelle, a resident of Woburn, see ibid. XXXVI. (1882), 329.

There are various genealogies in the Winchester Record, such as Thomp- son, Vol. II., 34-40; Converse (France and England), Vol. II., 208-22; Walker, Vol. II., 226-31 ; Belknap, Vol. II., 272-82 ; Swan, Vol. II., 438-59.

The basis of future research in Woburn, when the subject of geneal- ogy is under consideration, will be the digest of Births, Deaths, and Marriages, by Edward F. Johnson. This valuable compilation is noticed elsewhere. Assistance on this subject may be rendered by the manuscript transcripts of inscriptions in the two old burying-grounds at Woburn Centre, collected and arranged in chronological order, with brief illustra- tive notes and indexes, by the present writer, and noticed under the sub- ject of Burying-grounds in another part of this contribution.

* Since the above was written, two additional genealogies relating to Woburn have been announced : Wyman, by Joseph G. Wyman, of Skowhegan, Me., and Parker, by John L. Parker, of Lynn, Mass. See also an article entitled, " The Butterfields of Middlesex," in the N. E. Hist. and Gen. Register, Vol. XLIV., page 33.
