INTRODUCTORY
The Baltimore City Directory for 1914 presents no radical changes in general features from late issues of the work, and the publishers deem no further introduction necessary than the assurance that the present volume fully maintains the reputation for thoroughness and accuracy in every detail earned in the past.
Persons who may not be familiar with the scope of the information given in the Directory are referred to the Index to Contents imme- diately following this introductory.
BALTIMORE.
ADVANTAGES WHICH THE CITY OFFERS TO COMMER -. CIAL AND MANUFACTURING COMPANIES TO LOCATE IN BALTIMORE.
Nearness to coal and iron fields and raw materials of various kinds. An abundant supply of labor. A distributing center, especially for the South and West. Great dock and terminal facilities. Proximity to sources of most diversified food supply at the lowest cost of any large city in the United States. An industrious and intelligent population. Conservative financial methods. Moderate real estate values. Good water supply. Sanitary sewerage system. Smooth paved streets. Efficient fire department. Lowest rates for electric power on the Atlan- tic Seaboard.
TRANSFER PORT FOR THE PANAMA CANAL TRADE.
Baltimore is the nearest of any city on the Atlantic coast to the great Middle West, the nearest of any city on the Atlantic coast to both the western and eastern coast of South America, and therefore in a position to receive that trade which the railroads that have their terminals here -- the B. & O., the Pennsylvania and the Western Maryland-will bring from the West for export to South America when the Panama Canal is in full operation. This will be loaded on ships and carried down the Atlantic coast to the canal, through the canal to the Pacific, down the west coast of South America to various destinations; or from the port of Valparaiso, Chile, sent through and over the Andes by rail to Buenos Aires, and thence to other parts of Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil. These countries will find it cheaper to send back to the United States, by reversing this process, their raw materials which they are now sending to Europe, and the vessels will have a return cargo which they will also bring to Baltimore to be loaded upon the cars of our rail- roads and sent to all points in the interior.
Not only can the West ship to South America by way of Baltimore and the canal more advantageously to both shipper and receiver, but so favorably is Baltimore situated that the products of the West can also be carried up the Pacific coast to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Port- land and other cities at less cost than by rail over the Rockies. Further- more, what can be carried north and south of the canal on the coast can be carried also with the same advantage in rates and time in transit to Australia, the Philippines, China, Japan and other Asiatic points.
If Baltimore can carry the manufactured goods of the Middle West to these points to the mutual advantage of all concerned, can she not

also carry the goods made in her own factories and shops to still greater advantage?
THE HARBOR.
The harbor of Baltimore is one of the first commercial ports of the United States and sponsor of the world's famous Baltimore Clipper ; is reached by the Chesapeake bay and the Patapsco river, having a fine channel thirty-five feet in depth, six hundred feet wide and only twenty miles long, which makes the city of Baltimore easily approached.
Silt, the ever treacherous enemy to inland navigation, is practically absent, and as the bottom is of hard clay, a uniform depth is assured with but a slight expenditure for maintenance.
Baltimore harbor is land-locked and is considered one of the safest ports on the Atlantic Seaboard. The water front of the city is about eighteen miles in length and the depth of water averages thirty feet, a depth entirely adequate for vessels of great length.
Giant warehouses and elevators, as well as coal piers, have been designed with this in view, and hundreds of thousands of tons are an- nually handled through them, direct from the cars to the elevators or the vessels.
Freight is transferred from one point to another in the harbor, or, strictly speaking, within lighterage limits, by means of lighters or car floats and by this means property is delivered at the wharf or plant of the owner.
For the convenience of shippers, the transportation companies have established stations at advantageous places about the harbor for the receipt of freights, and the distinct advantage of this is that by this method the long hauls across the city to the main dock or station of the water carrier is obviated; the shipper delivers his freight at the nearest receiving station and it is lightered without cost to him to the steamer line via which it is consigned.
RAIL AND WATER TRANSPORTATION.
Water transportation is considered synonymous with the cheapness, and whenever the first term is used the associate idea occurs, thus it is generally understood that water transportation is cheaper than via all rail haul. So is a combination of the two cheaper, generally, than all rail transportation.
The facilities of both the rail and water lines serving Baltimore are unexcelled. Traffic reaching Baltimore in carload quantities by the steamer lines and destined beyond is loaded directly into cars on car- floats placed alongside of the steamer and transferred to the termini of the rail lines. Less than carload traffic is handled by lighters in much the same manner.
Practically all of the steamer lines sailing from Baltimore make rail connections, and a widely diversified traffic is handled daily via those lines.
TRAFFIC ON THE CHESAPEAKE.
The number of documented vessels now operated under the Baltimore Custom House is something over 2,000. In addition to that, it is esti- mated that there are operated within the district of Maryland not less than 5,000 unregistered motor boats, all of which carry freight.
The tonnage for the calendar year 1912 amounted to 1,288,850 tons, foreign, representing 576 vessels, while coastwise the tonnage amounted to 2,829,451 tons, representing 1,584 vessels entered; while for 1913

the foreign entries represent 718 vessels, with a tonnage of 1,647,964 tons, and coastwise, 1,639 vessels, with a tonnage of 2,973,052 tons- showing an increase both coastwise and foreign of vessels entered at the Baltimore Custom House in 1913 over 1912. In proportion the clearances are practically the same. In 1912, 667 foreign vessels cleared, with a tonnage of 1,608,605 tons ; coastwise, 1,856 vessels, with a ton- nage of 2,891,950 tons; in 1913 there were cleared 821 foreign vessels, with a tonnage of 1,957,223 tons, and coastwise, 1,915 vessels, with a tonnage of 3,118,693 tons.
SHIPBUILDING INDUSTRY.
The shipbuilding industry of Baltimore yards for the year 1913 was not a small factor in the city's productions along mechanical lines. There were produced 49 new vessels of all classes from the great ocean freight steamers to the modest but necessary harbor lighter. These vessels tonned 48,856 gross measurement, and represented $4,318,075 when turned out of the builders' hands. In 1912, 59 vessels, represent- ing 51,000 tons, and valued at $4,010,800 were the products of the yards. In a general way the repair work in the yards was in some cases above that of 1912, and 1914 started with orders in several of the yards. Baltimore shipbuilders are receiving a good share of Govern- ment work-colliers, dredges, etc.
IMPORTS THROUGH THE PORT OF BALTIMORE.
There was imported through the port of Baltimore for the calendar year 1912 merchandise free of duty amounting to $12,397,587, while for the calendar year 1913 the merchandise free of duty imported amounted to $15,182,217, showing an increase for 1913 over that of 1912 of $2,785,000 in round numbers.
Of the merchandise imported subject to duty the figures for the calendar year 1912 are $15,504,256; for 1913, $19,967,813-this show- ing an increase for 1913 over 1912 in round figures of $4,463,000. Adding the increase of value of free with the increase in value of dutiable merchandise we have a gross increase for 1913 over 1912 of $7,248,000 in round figures.
EXPORTS THROUGH THE PORT OF BALTIMORE.
Goods exported from this country for which foreign payments of money come in, the calendar year 1913 showed a tremendous increase- in round figures, $17,000,000. The total exports for the calendar year 1912 were valued at $100,287,327; for 1913, $117,030,199.
The gross collections for 1913 were $4,471,185.47, while for 1912 they were $4,562,876.11, showing a decrease for 1913 of $91,690.64. It cost the Government to collect the revenue, etc., for the year 1913, $299,671.66; for 1912, $307,039.68, a decrease in expense amounting to $7,368.02.
BALTIMORE THIRD IN COAL EXPORTS.
For the first time in its history Baltimore has outstripped Philadel- phia as a coal exporting port and now ranks third in importance among the country's foreign coal shipping centres. Figures compiled at the Custom House show that 870,751 tons of coal were exported during 1913, with a total value of $2,337,337. Against this only 628,522 tons were exported during 1912, with a total value of $1,657,933.

BALTIMORE'S GRAIN EXPORTS INCREASE 38 PER CENT.
Baltimore increased its grain exports during 1913 something more than 38 per cent. as compared with 1912.
In the last year Baltimore exported, according to the figures given by the Chamber of Commerce, 46,857,881 bushels.
IMMIGRATION INCREASES 13,000 IN 1913.
Thirteen thousand more immigrants entered this country through the port of Baltimore in 1913 than in the year previous, according to the report of United States Immigration Inspector Smith.
In 1912, 28,267 aliens came in on ships. In 1913 the number landed in Baltimore was 41,693.
Of the newcomers in 1913, 24,955 came from the Russian Empire and Finland, 8,930 from Hungary, 6,456 from Austria and 2,075 from the German Empire. The remainder came from various European countries principally, a few only from Asia, Africa and South America.
Of the aliens who arrived, 4,784 came to make Maryland their home. The rest merely disembarked here and took trains for Western or Southern States. Of those who stayed in Maryland, 1,379 were He- brews, 1,064 Polish, 688 Germans, 905 Russians, 301 Lithuanians and the remainder from various races. In 1913, 322 aliens were deported.
IDEALLY LOCATED FOR THE COMFORT AND PLEASURE OF TOURISTS.
It is just forty-five minutes distant, by trains running every hour on two roads, from the Nation's capital-Washington. An electric railroad, unsurpassed in equipment and roadbed, running its trains on a thirty-minute schedule, connects the heart of Baltimore with that of Washington in seventy minutes. The city of Annapolis, rich in national historic associations and interest, is reached in thirty minutes by trolley. At Annapolis is located the Naval Academy-the most beautiful of all the properties maintained by the National Government-where mil- lions of dollars have in the last few years been spent.
Atlantic City can be reached from Baltimore in three hours on daily through trains. Philadelphia is two hours away, and New York is four hours from Baltimore. Richmond and Old Point Comfort, Vir- ginia, can be reached on magnificent steamships leaving Baltimore daily. There are many beautiful bay and river trips which will delight visitors who have time to take them. Excursions, running thirty or forty miles down the beautiful Chesapeake bay and to the various re- sorts on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, one of the garden spots of the world. Pen-Mar, in the Blue Ridge, is only a short ride distant and Harper's Ferry and the mountain resorts of Western Maryland will invite pleasant stop-overs. The great battlefield of Gettysburg-the one place to which every American citizen should at least make one visit-is less than two hours distant from Baltimore.
New York alone excepted, Baltimore has as good hotel accommoda- tions as any city in the country.
The street car system of Baltimore is probably unequaled in America. Its long rides for five cents, its finely equipped cars and a service which railroad men admit to be without a peer, will afford accommodations to thousands of visitors to enjoy trolley rides along the historic Chesa- peake bay and into the picturesque suburbs with their numerous places of amusement, where summer opera, high-class attractions and fine music can be had at small cost.
