After 21 years of continuous and successful service, this house has been entirely rebuilt, except the walls and roof, under the plans and direction of J. B. McElfatrick & Son, of New York, the leading Theatrical Architects of the United States, supervised by E. Herman Brown, of Baltimore.
It is now in every feature of eminent fitness for its varied artistic uses and for the comfort of its patrons, the leading Theatre of The Southern States.
Located in the centre of the city, cable and electric cars passing its front and side every minute, extending from street to street, lighted by its own electric plant, heated by steam, with but one fire (in a proofed basement) in the entire building, ventilated by a spacious air shaft, seatings of the most modern styles for 2,200, a magnificent foyer, with no portion of the building rented or devoted to other uses, with egress sufficient to empty the auditorium in three minutes, are apparent features of this modern play-house.
Leading attractions of this country and Europe have been secured, and will be presented in rapid succession.
Mr. John T. Ford, the Senior Manager of the United States, having been in continuous service for over forty years, is the consulting manager. The active management will be in the hands of his son, Charles E. Ford.

PREFACE.
We have the pleasure of presenting to the kind consid- eration of our patrons and the public generally the SIXTH EDITION of our BUSINESS DIRECTORY, much improved in Compilation, Classification and General Style. The ground covered by the work includes all the territory within the City's limits, as well as the numerous outlying suburbs, and the increase in the number of names it contains is a true index to the prosperity and remarkably rapid growth of the City.
It contains the names and locations of Banks, Insurance Companies, Railroads, Newspapers, Corporations, Manufac- turers, etc. Every trade, occupation and profession is fully represented, and classified accordingly, thus giving its patrons and the many strangers who visit our city a clearer insight into our industries and trade than any work issued.
All the principal Hotels in Maryland, Virginia, West . Virginia and North Carolina are supplied with a copy of the work, and there is a constant and increasing demand for it from all sections of the United States, as well as Europe. We feel that its columns must necessarily be invaluable for advertising purposes.
We return our sincere thanks for the liberal support and encouragement received from the Public in our efforts to produce a work of Utility and Service to them, and hope to deserve a continuation of the same.
Respectfully,
R. L. POLK & CO. B. R. SHERIFF, Manager.
