Introductory.
Fifteenth Annual Edition.
The City Directory is without exception, the book most frequently consulted by the majority of citizens of every class, and hence, is the most useful. It is as in- dispensable in all cities of considerable size as Electric Lighting, Street Railways or Newspapers. By the Directory a close estimate of the actual population of a city can be estimated, and the name, home and business occupation of the citizens recorded. It has also a valuable historical character, making its yearly volume useful for the historian and the attorney. As legal evidence, it is in frequent use, and is a recog- nized authority in the Courts and in tracing the whereabouts of missing people it Is a book of common use.
Notwithstanding nearly one-half of the Printing for this year's Directory was destroyed by fire, we take great pleasure in announcing that by putting an extra force of hands to work, and placing the printing into two different printing offices, we are enabled to issue it a few days ahead of the usual time. The following esti- mate of population may be of interest to all.
The Directory of 1900 contained 212,722 names; the Directory for 1901 contains fully 215,450 names-an increase of 2,728. This is indicative of an increase in population during the year of 1900 of fully 8,866, and a present population of 700,212. This is figured on a basis of 314, the figure heretofore used to represent the women and children not included in the Directory. While this does not agree with the United States Census, it will be remembered that in addition to this the Directory can- vass has not been confined to the city limits, as several of the suburban towns are Included. While the estimate of population may seem an exaggeration, we think it is not in excess of the actual number of souls located in Baltimore City and its su- burbs. By careful estimate, the population of the suburban towns we canvassed is fully 30,400. Deducting this amount from 700,212, the total population given above, the population of Baltimore City is fully 669,812.
For further information as to the growth or decrease in the population of the city since 1796 see table opposite.
Our Directory Library contains Directories of all the principal cities of the United States, Europe, Canada, Central America, Mexico, West India Islands, Etc (see catalogue of same, pages 69 to 72) for the free use of our patrons. In addi- tion to the benefits which our citizens derive from this valuable library, our "Ex- change System," which places the Baltimore City Directory in all Directory Librar- les throughout this country and Europe, serves as an excellent advertisement for a prosperous city; for no other publication can convey such an idea of the city, its growth, its people, with their trades and professions, its schools, churches, societies, banks, railroads and incorporated companies, and all the various institutions and or- ganizations. The wide circulation of the Directory enables capitalists and business men in every locality to communicate with citizens, and to note the progress and im- provements the Directory annually records.
The Publishers desire to call the attention of the public to the itinerant-directory publishers and fakirs that periodically visit Baltimore, who, assuming a local char- acter, on the plea of "home enterprise," bleed the people for useless advertising at the expense of legitimate publishers. They generally wind up at the Criminal Court or In Jail, as we have seen in several recent instances. BEWARE OF THE MAN WHO CARRIES A BALTIMORE DIRECTORY IN SOLICITING ADVERTISEMENTS, UN- LESS HE CAN SHOW AUTHORTY FROM US!
The usual care for which the Publishers have acquired a national reputation, has been devoted to the compilation, printing and binding, all of which has been done in this city.
To find a name you must know how to spell it. It is not uncommon for members of the same family to spell their names differently, preserving the pronunciation. A few Instances, as follows: Cain, Kain, Kane; Cohen. Cohn, Kohn; Kelley, Kelly; Kenney, Kenny, Kinney: Paine, Payne; Read, Reed, Reid; Rels, Reiss, Rice; Schnel- der, Snider, Snyder; Smith, Schmidt, Schmitt. Directories are arranged and printed In exact alphabetical order. If the examiner knows the way the name is spelled, and will follow out the order of the alphabet, he will save time and vexation of spirit. With sincere thanks to all who have patronized the work, the press and the, public In general, we are
