Introductory.

Seventeenth Annual Edition.

The City Directory is without exception the book most frequently consulted by the majority of citizens of every class, and hence, is the most useful. It is as indispensable in all cities of considerable size as Electric Lighting, Street. Railways or Newspapers. By The Directory a close estimate of the actual population of a city can be estimated, and the name, home and business oc- cupation of the citizens recorded. It has also a valuable historical charac- ter, making its yearly volume useful for the historian and the attorney. As. legal evidence, it is in frequent use, and is a recognized authority in the Courts and in tracing the whereabouts of missing people it is a book of com- mon use.

The following estimate of population may be of interest to all. The Di- rectory of 1902 contained 212,020 names; the Directory for 1903 contains 214,500 names. This is indicative of a population of fully 697,125. This is figured . on. a basis of 314, the figure heretofore used to represent the women, children and. transient population not represented in the Directory.

While this does not agree with the United States or State censuses, it must be remembered that in addition the Directory canvass is more thor- oughly and systematically conducted and made by trained men, and has not. been confined to the city limits, as several of the suburban towns are includ- ed. While the estimate of population may seem an exaggeration, we, think it is not in excess of the actual number of souls located in Baltimore, City and its suburbs. By careful estimate the population of the suburban towns we canvassed is fully 32,400. Deducting this amount from 697,125, the total. pop- ulation given above, the population of Baltimore City is fully 664,725.

For further information as to the growth or decrease in the population of the city since 1796 see table opposite.

Our Patrons and the Public may be surprised at the difference between the size of last year's Directory and this year's volume. In explanation, will ex- plain the cause by stating that this year's book is printed on paper fully one-fifth lighter in weight than we have used heretofore, and that we cut out eight hundred and sixty-eight top corner card Advertisements, thus saving fully eighty-six pages; and by so doing the work will be less cumbersome and more convenient to handle; besides this the binding will be more durable and lasting.

The Street Directory has been carefully revised and will be found full and complete.

Our Directory Library contains Directories of all the principal cities of the United States, Europe, Canada, Central America, Mexico, West India Islands, Etc. (see catalogue of same, pages 66 to 68) for the free use of our patrons. In addition to the benefits which our citizens derive from this valuable library, our "Exchange System," which places the Baltimore City Directory in all Di- rectory Libraries throughout this country and Europe, serves as an excellent advertisement for a prosperous city; for no other publication can convey such an idea of the city, its growth, its people, with their trades and professions; its schools, churches, societies, banks, railroads and incorporated companies, and all the various institutions and organizations. The wide circulation of the Di- rectory enables capitalists and business men in every locality to communicate with citizens and to note the progress and improvements the Directory annu- ally records.

The Publishers desire to call the attention of the public to the itinerant-di- rectory publishers and fakirs that periodically visit Baltimore, who, assuming a local character, on the plea of "home enterprise," bleed the people for use- less advertising at the expense of legitimate publishers. They generally wind up at the Criminal Court or in Jail, as we have seen in severalrecent instances. BEWARE OF THE MAN WHO CARRIES A BALTIMORE DIRECTORY IN SOLICITING ADVERTISEMENTS, UNLESS HE CAN SHOW AUTHORITY FROM US!

The usual care for which the Publishers have acquired a national reputa- iton has been devoted to the compilation, printing and binding, all of which has been done in this city.

To find a name you must know how to spell it. It is not uncommon for members of the same family to spell their names differently, preserving the pronunciation. A few instances, as follows: Cain, Kain, Kane; Cohen, Cohn, Kohn; Kelley, Kelly; Kenney, Kenny, Kinney; Paine, Payne: Read, Reed, Reid; Reis, Reiss, Rice; Schneider, Snider, Snyder; Smith, Schmidt, Schmitt. Directo- ries are arranged and printed in exact alphabetical order. If the examiner knows the way the name is spelled, and will follow out the order of the alpha- bet, he will save time and vexation of spirit. With sincere thanks to all who have patronized the work, the press and the public in general, we are
