INTRODUCTORY.
Eighteenth Annual Edition.
As the fire of the 7th, 8th and 9th of February last, destroyed all of the sheets for the Baltimore City Directory for 1904, which was very nearly completed and which under ordinary circumstances would have been ready for delivery in five or six days, we were compelled to recanvass the whole burned district and other sec- tions of the City, and are pleased to state that it is only four or five weeks behind the date of its regular issue.
The alphabetical portion of the Directory has the permanent or temporary loca- tion of most of the parties that were burned out; if it has not, particular attention is called to the Supplement in front of book.
As we have been put to an enormous expense by the fire, and have had many obstacles to overcome, a few errors or discrepancies may occur, which we beg a kind and indulgent public to overlook.
The following estimate of population will be of interest to all. The Directory for 1903 contained 214,500 names. The Directory for 1904 contains 216,150. This is indica- tive of a population of fully 702,487. This is figured on a basis of 314, the figure hereto- fore used to represent the women, children and transient population not represented in the Directory.
While this does not agree with the United States or State censuses, it must be remembered that in addition the Directory canvass is more thoroughly and sys- tematically conducted and made by trained men, and has not been confined to the city limits, as several of the suburban towns are included. While the estimate of population may seem an exaggeration, we think it is not in excess of the actual num- ber of souls located in Baltimore City and its suburbs. By careful estimate the pop- ulation of the suburban towns we canvassed is fully 34,600. Deducting this amount from 702,487, the total population given above, the population of Baltimore City is fully 667, 887.
The Street Directory has been carefully revised and will be found full and com- plete.
Our Directory Library containing Directories of all the principal cities of the United States, Europe, Canada, Central America, Mexico, West India Islands, Etc., having been destroyed by the fire, will be replaced as soon as possible, for the free use of our patrons. In addition to the benefits which our citizens will derive from this valuable library, our "Exchange System," which places the Baltimore City Directory in all Directory Libraries throughout this country and Europe, serves as an excellent advertisement for a prosperous city; for no other publication can convey such an idea of the city, its growth, its people, with their trades and professions; its schools, churches, societies, banks, railroads and incorporated companies, and all the various institutions and organizations. The wide circulation of the Directory enables cap- italists and business men in every locality to communicate with citizens and to note the progress and improvements the Directory annually records.
The Publishers desire to call the attention of the public to the itinerant-directory publishers and fakirs that periodically visit Baltimore, who, assuming a local char- acter on the plea of "home enterprise." bleed the people for useless advertising at the expense of legitimate publishers. They generally wind up at the Criminal Court or in Jail, as we have seen in several recent instances. BEWARE OF THE MAN WHO CARRIES A BALTIMORE DIRECTORY IN SOLICITING ADVERTISE- MENTS, UNLESS HE CAN SHOW AUTHORITY FROM US!
The usual care for which the Publishers have acquired a national reputation has been devoted to the compilation, printing and binding of this work.
To find a name you must know how to spell it. It is not uncommon for members of the same family to spell their names differently, preserving the pronunciation. A few instances, as follows: Cain, Kain, Kane; Cohen, Cohn, Kohn; Kelley, Kelly; Kenney, Kenny, Kinney; Paine, Payne; Read, Reed, Reid; Reis, Reiss, Rice; Schneider, Snider, Snyder; Smith, Schmidt, Schmitt. Directories are arranged and printed in exact alphabetical order. If the examiner knows the way the name is spelled, and will follow out the order of the alphabet, he will save time and vexation of spirit. With sincere thanks to all who have patronized the work, the press and the public in general, we are
Very respectfully,
R. L. POLK & CO.,
