The Third Maryland Artillery was mustered into the service of the Con- federate States January 14th, 1862, at Richmond, Va. Immediately sent to Knoxville, Tenn. Served under Gen. E. Kirby Smith in the Campaigns in Tennessee and Kentucky, being. the advance battery from Lexington, Ky., to within three and a half miles of Covington. After the retreat from Kentucky, was sent to Vicksburg under Gen. Stevenson, one section commanded by Lieut. W. T. Patten manned the guns of the Ram Queen of the West, when the Indianola was captured. All except four were lost, when the Queen was burned, one detachment underi Lieut. Win. L. Ritter, served under Col. G. W. Ferguson . 011 Deer Creek, during which time it assisted in capturing a large Federal trans- port. It afterwards served under Gen. Johnston in the battle before Jackson,

CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS' HOME.


Miss. Three detachments remained at Vicksburg and participated in the battle of Baker's Creek and were besieged at Vicksburg and there taken prisoners. Seventy-seven were paroled and furloughed, after being exchanged. Reorganized in September 1862. The Company again ready for active service. Went to the front at Sweetwater, Tenn., October 2d, 1863. Thence to Lookout Mountain, thence to Missionary Ridge and commenced the retreat to Dalton, Ga. On the night of the 24th this command from its organization to the present time, has never lost a gun except, at the surrender at Vicksburg. The Company's last muster was at Meridan, Miss., May roth, 1865.

CONSTITUTION


OF THE


Society of the Army and Navy


OF THE


CONFEDERATE STATES,


IN THE STATE OF MARYLAND.


CHAPTER I.


To collect and preserve the material for a truthful history of the late War- between the Confederate States and the United States of America ; to honor the memory of our Comrades who have fallen ; to cherish the ties of friendship among those who survive, and to fulfil the duties of sacred charity towards those who may stand in need of them-we whose names are appended do hereby associate ourselves together for the purpose named, and do adopt for our gov- ernment the following Constitution :


SECTION 1. The name of our Society shall be " The Society of the Army and Navy of the Confederate States, in the State of Maryland."


SEC. 2. All persons shall be eligible to membership who honorably served in the Army or Navy of the Confederate States until the close of the war, or were honorably discharged therefrom.


SEC. 3. All male descendants of those who honorably served in the Army and Navy of the Confederate States until the close of the war, or were honor- ably discharged therefrom, upon arriving at the age of fifteen years, upon satis- factory proof, shall be entitled to membership, but without a vote until arriving at the age of eighteen years.

SEC. 4. Members of kindred societies in other States may be elected honor- ary members by a vote of this Society.


SEC. 5. The election of honorary members shall be viva voce upon the nomination of the General Committee, and shall confer no privilege beyond that of attending meetings and reunions of the Society, without a vote.


SEC. 6. Active members who have ceased to contribute to the support of the Society, while in arrears, shall be considered and denominated Passive meil- bers, and be debarred the privilege of participating in the meetings of the So- cicty.


SEC. 7. Applications for membership shall be addressed to the Corresponding Secretary, and shall be made in accordance with a printed form to be prescribed for the purpose by the General Committee, and shall set forth briefly the military or naval record of the applicant, accompanied by satisfactory proofs of honorable service.


SEC. 8. The record furnished by cach member elected at the time of his application shall be copied into a book to be kept for the purpose ; and in order that said records may be uniform and complete, original members of the Soci- cty shall furnish to the Recording Secretary similar statements, prepared ac- cording to the same forin.


SEC. 9. Applications when received shall be referred to the General Com- mittee, by whom they shall be considered and voted upon, each applicant being balloted for separately, and one-third of those present being sufficient to defeat . any application.


SEC. 10. All persons who are in entire sympathy with our cause are eligible to auxiliary membership upon the payment of five dollars initiation fee and two dollars per annum, without a vote.


SEC. II. The officers of the Society shall be a President, twelve Vice- Presidents, one Recording Secretary, one Assistant, one Corresponding Secre- tary, a Treasurer, four Chaplains, and an Executive Committee of seven, all of whom shall be elected annually, and who shall constitute together the General Committec.


. SEC. 12. The Executive Committee shall make arrangements for the general meetings and annual reunions, also for the proper observance of Mem- orial Days, and for the expenditure of the funds of the Society for the payment of current expenses and charitable purposes, and all other business of the Society. The committee shall meet on the call of the President, who with the Secretary slrall be ex-officio members. Three members shall constitute a quorum:


SEC. 13. The General Committee, of which the President shall be ex- officio chairman, shall meet on the call of the President for the purpose of disposing of applications for membership. Seven members a quorum.


SEC. 14. The annual meeting shall be held on the 3rd Tuesday in Deceni- ber, at such time and place as the Executive Committee shall designate.


SEC. 15. General meetings may be held at other times on the call of the Executive Committee.
