They will stitch, hem, fell, bind, and gather. They make a strong lock stitch, that cannot be raveled or pulled out. They make a beautiful, uniform stitch, alike on both sides of the work, without forming ridges underneath.

The Machines have great strength, are perfectly simple, and the manage- ment of them easily acquired.

Any spool of cotton, thread or silk, may be used without re-winding. They are almost noiseless in their operation, and will wear longer than any other Sewing Machine extant.

PREFACE.

IN submitting the present volume of WOODS' BALTIMORE CITY DIRECTORY, the publisher takes pleasure in pointing to the unerring evidences of the City's prosperity, which is indicated by the large increase in names compared with that of last year. The difficulties and embarrass- ments of compiling a Directory have been descanted upon and explained until the repetition of them has become tiresome. The method pursued in collecting and arranging the names is such, that an error should hardly occur, and yet it must inevitably happen that some will ' be found, although they will be fewer in this than in any heretofore issued.

The Directory is published to meet the wants of a large class of the citizens. To meet this want-to produce a work which will promote the convenience, and be of service to the business community-where the compilers have a correct knowledge and experience in their calling, we think it will be admitted that they have a right to expect a fair amount of support in their undertaking from those who derive benefit from its publication. Our experience, however, has shown that a number of those who use a Directory, and profit by it, are more willing to participate in the benefits arising from its publication than they are to contribute their portion to reimburse the publisher for the labor and outlay he expends in its preparation.

In looking for names in the Directory, many mistakes occur, and errors are attributed where none exist, from not knowing the proper mode of spelling the name looked for. The similarity in the sounds of names of different orthography, leads to innumerable blunders.

The BUSINESS DIRECTORY will be found to be a valuable improvement on former issues, and cannot fail to be appreciated by business men.

While thanking our subscribers for their increased liberality, we regret to be compelled to add a word or two of complaint. We regard it as exceedingly strange that our business men, notwithstanding their proverbial tact and shrewdness, will permit themselves to be so frequently imposed upon by ephemeral and worthless publications, claiming to be "Business Directories," or what not, gotten up by adventurers, without character or permanence, and not containing any information that may not be better procured in the pages of our issue. We can substantiate the assertion, that in no instance has the entire city been canvasseul for information of this kind, except by the publisher of this work.

We take pleasure in presenting to the citizens our STREET DIRECTORY, showing the odd and even numbers on the corners, or right and left hand crossings of the several streets in the city. Many of the new streets recently opened are not properly or legally named-others have no sign boards on them, rendering it difficult to make this part of the work as perfect as it would otherwise be.

This work was commenced the latter part of last January, and was to have been pub- lished by the first of May. After canvassing three weeks, we had to stop on account of a

iv

PREFACE.

bill relative to numbering the houses being introduced before the City Council, which was not finally acted upon until the middle of June. We immediately recommenced our labors, being subjected to the additional trouble and expense of canvassing afresh all the ground that had been gone over.

Our earnest desire has been to produce a work worthy of the interest of the community at large, and make it a faithful reflex of the business enterprise and commercial greatness of Baltimore, encouraged as we have been by the largely increased subscription list, to persevere in our labors, it shall be our endeavor, in every succeeding annual issue, to introduce such improvements as shall render it still more necessary and useful to its patrons, and an indis- pensable guide to citizens and strangers.

In closing these remarks, the publisher would express his thanks for the uniform cour- tesy extended to his canvassers during the progress of the work ; the prompt and ready acquiescence exhibited by the different public officers in furnishing information, and the valuable assistance rendered by numerous friends are warmly appreciated.
