Applied to Roofs,

RAILROAD DEPOTS, CARS, MACHINE SHOPS, BLACKSMITH AND CAR- PENTER SHOPS, ENGINE HOUSES, STEAMBOATS, STEEPLES, &c.

SHEET IRON ROOFING is best adapted for Rail Road Depots, Machine, Blacksmith and Carpenter Shops, Engine Houses, &c., where there is danger of sparks from passing Loco- motives.

GALVANIZED SHEET IRON does not require any sheathing of wood, the Sheets being applied from rafter to rafter thus making the building, so covered, almost fire proof.

TIN ROOFING will be found best for Hotels, Dwellings, Offices or other buildings not exposed to sparks from locomotives, steamboats, &c.

WHITE LEAD applied to the joints and crevices of Sheet Iron Roofing preserves the Roofing many years longer, as corrosion first takes place at these points.

We are prepared to apply our Paint, made of the best materials, to all work requiring it, upon the most reasonable terms.

. Work done by us at Mount Clare Station, of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, some twenty-five years ago is sound and perfect to this day.

We guarantee all work done by us to be of the best material and applied in the most workman-like manner.

We would refer to the Master of Road Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, and to the Master of Road Northern Central Railway.

PREFACE.

AFTER a delay far exceeding my expectation, arising from various causes- among them, the remarkable increase of names properly to be inserted for refer- ence ; an increase of 18,928 names beyond 54,552, the number in my last issue of 1865-6, it affords me gratification to present this edition, which will be found as accurate as the ever-shifting nature of its elements admit.

The immediate predecessor of this volume embraced 54,552 names ; this con- tains 73,480 names-not inclusive of the business directory, -and unlike the attempt at a Directory recently published in this City, and urged by every device and appliance upon the community, unsuccessfully however, the statements of name, residence, business and place of business will be found herein scrupulously accurate and reliable-affording a guide, whereto all, both citizens and strangers, may resort in well founded assurance of obtaining correct information-as to the living: unlike my pretentious competitor, I have not assigned to the dead, their former places of abode, of years past, as their present whereabout.

The employees of the Post Office and other public institutions in our midst, after groping laboriously and in vain, for light throughout the pages of the fic- titious work referred to-have felt constrained to consign it, as a humbug, a mis-leader, a blind guide and a vexation, to the receptacle of waste paper : and to recall to daily use my edition of 1865-66, as a far more reliable source of infor- mation. They especially will greet the issue of this volume with a cordial wel- come, and their approval will afford the surest evidence of its intrinsic worth.

The increase of the colored population in our midst-an increase of 3,400 on the population of '65-66-which was 5480, exhibits the extent to which their in- flux into our city has reached : for, upon no estimate of natural and ordinary increase can this remarkable addition be accounted for. When it is considered that about one-fourth only of the population properly is embraced in a Directory, the entire addition of this class will amount to 13,600, and their whole number to 35,572. Whether Houston's Directory wholly ignored this dark element of our numbers, or restricted its omissions to the white race, or made a mongrel combi- nation of oversights, I leave to those who may be inclined to ascertain the causes of his failure to give the 10,210 names not to be found in his Directory, but embraced herein.

Our whole number of inhabitants of both races, on the estimate of twenty-five- per cent. only being subjects for a Directory, amounts to 294,000, which enumer- ation will be found probably more accurate than would be a census, taken on a plan less searching and systematic than that necessarily adopted by any con- scientious publisher of a Directory-and which at great cost and labor has been. carried out in the compilation of this work.

.

iv

As usual in my former editions a full, complete and accurate Business Direc- tory, is embodied in this volume, showing a corresponding increase in this department, and the catalogue and location of streets now given, afford to the in- quirer the means of information which our present defective mode of number- ing houses may have failed to supply-and of that shamefully defective mode of enumeration, hourly evidence has accumulated during the unwearied search indispensable for the publication of this Directory.

To the Appendix as a compend of general information as to Government, State and City officers, Banks, Insurance Corporations, Railroad and Steamboat Companies and countless other heads-a slight refereuce will show its value- but can furnish to the casual observer but little means of appreciating how much of time and labor have been expended in its accurate completion.

The Advertising department has been carefully and as is ventured to be as-' sumed, well prepared-and in many instances the business of the advertiser has been greatly enlarged by this cheap mode of eliciting the attention, not of citizens only but of the crowd of strangers resorting hither-to the advantages offered in these advertisements ; the constant presence of this work at all hotels, public offices, counting rooms, banks, insurance offices, work-shops, &c., ever af- fording ready access to its pages-makes this department invaluable to the portions of our community and visitors, who deem time and facility of search matters of moment.

Attention is called to the list found on the back of the title page-of Correc- tions, Additions, Alterations, &c., which have become necessary during the course of publication.

For the courtesy uniformly extended to our canvassers, grateful acknowledg- ment is made-all, by whom each of such acts of consideration was exhibited, may rest assured of due appreciation on the part of its objects.

The public's obd't serv't,

THE PUBLISHER.
