Notice-The directions for giving an alarm will be found in the boxes.


The BELLS of the department will strike the number of the box thus: If the alarm comes from Box 24, they will strike 2-4, 2-4; if from 34, strike 3-4, 3-4, &c.

POSTAL RULES.


Many errora occur by persons not observing the fol- lowing regulations in depositing letters, papers, or miscellaneous publications in the Office for mailing. Money should never be enclosed in an ordinary envelop.


Valuable letters should be carried to the Post Office and registered. If Money is to be remitted, a Postal Money Order should be obtained. If upon pointa where there is no Money Order Office, then the letter should be registered.


Direct letters plainly to the Street and Number, as well as the Post Office, County and State. By inserting upon letters the County in which the Office is located, many errors in superscription might be detected, and mistakes in mailing avoided.


.Head letters with the name of the writer'a Post Office and State, Street and Number. Sign them with full name, and request that answers be directed accordingly


All drop letters, or letters to be delivered within the city, must be prepaid by Postage Stamps at the rate of 2 cents per × ounce or under.


Prepayment by Stamps required on all letters to places within the United States, at the rate of 3 cents per X ounce or under. An additional rate of three cents is required foreach additional & ounce, or fraction thereof.


Transient newspapersand magazines, regular publica- tions designed primarily for advertising purposes, or for free circulation, or for circulation at nominal rates, and all printed matter of the third class, except unsealed circulars, shall be admitted to, and be transmitted in the mails, at the rate of one cent for every two ouncea or fractional part thereof, and one cent for each two additional ounces or fractional part thereof; and the sender of any article of the third class of mail-matter may write his or her name or address therein or on the outside thereof, with the word "from" above or preced- ing the same, or may write briefly or print on any package the number and names of the articles inclosed.


Publishers of newspapers and periodicals may print on the wrappers of newspapers or magazinea sent from the office of publication to regular subscribera the time to which subscription therefor has been paid, and ad- dresses upon postal cards and unsealed circulars may be either written, printed, or affixed thereto, at the option of the sender.


On unsealed circulars and all mailable matter of the third class other than that designated in the aforegoing section, postage will be charged as heretofore, one cent for each ounce or fraction thereof.


Full prepayment by Stamps required on all transient printed matter, foreign and domestic.


All letters not prepaid by stamps, all auch as are re- ceived in the Office with atamps cut from Stamped Envelops, or with such Postage Stamps as were in use prior to 1861, or with Revenue Stamps on them are treated as "unmailable," and are so sent to the Dead Letter Office.


Packages containing poisona, oils, explosive chemi- cals, liquids, or anything calculated to injure or en- danger the safety of the mails, will not be received.


A letter once delivered to any one authorized to receive it, cannot be forwarded without additional postage.


CITY DELIVERY.


The public are requested to adopt the house-door letter-boxes, the use of which will result in greatly increased rapidity in the delivery of letters. Free de- livery of letters by faithful Carriers will be secured by having them plainly addressed to the street and number. No necessity exista for persons calling at the office, as all may have their mail matter left at their residences regularly, without risk or charge. Four deliveries will be made daily by the Letter Carriers, beginning at 8.00 A. M., 10.30 A. M., 2.15 P.M., and 4.30 P. MI.

COLLECTIONS


Are quade daily from the street letter-boxes as follows : 1 st. : 00. to $ 30 A. M. : 24, 12.00 to 1 45 1'. M. ; 3d, 7.00 to S.45 P. M., except Sunday, when one collection from 4 to 8 1'. M Is made. Letters are also collected and delivered at the principal hotels.


STAMPED ENVELOPS.


The attention of the public is called to the advantages of using Stamped Envelope rather than l'ostage Stamps. Daily, numbers of letters are dropped in the l'ost Office without prepayment, with Revenue Stamps, and Stamps cut from Stamped Envelops affixed, which are held for postage; whereas by the use of Stamped Envelops, these letters would go forward without delay.


Persons purchasing Stamped Envelops, of any de- nomination, in quantities of 600 and upwards, may have their address and request to return in a specified time printed thereon. Lot to exceed four lines, free of charge. The Department offers unusual inducements to the public in the sale of Stamped Envelops.
