Founded by George Peabody, Feb. 12, 1857. Corner of Mt. Vernon and Washington Places. The Institute has four Departments :
1. A Library of 69,000 volumes, open from 9 A. M. until 9 P. M., to all callers, being en- tirely free. The books are not taken from the building.
2. A Lecture Department, in which about 100 lectures are given each year on Science, Litera- ture and Art, by the most accomplished scholars of the country, at merely nominal prices.
3. An Academy of Music. Instruction given in all branches of Music at greatly reduced prices, and several concerts are given every sea- son at about half the cost of the music.
4. A Gallery of Art, containing many beau- tiful works of Art by Rinehart, Powers and others.
