PEABODY INSTITUTE.


Founded by George Peabody, Feb. 12, 1857. Corner of Mt. Vernon and Washington Places. The Institute has four Departments:


1. A Library of 71,000 volumes, open from 9 A. M. until 9 P. M., to all callers, being en- tirely free. The books are not taken from the building.


2. A Lecture Department, in which about 30 lectures are given each year on Science, Litera- ture and Art, by the most accomplished scholars of the country, at merely nominal prices.


3. A Conservatory of Music. Instruction given in all branches of Music at greatly re- duced prices, and several concerts are given every season at about halfthe cost of the music.


4. A Gallery of Art, containing many heau- tiful works of Art by Rinehart, Powers and others.

The object of this Society is to supply a need long felt for increasing the opportunities for sup- port of women who are dependent upon their own exertions. To encourage the dignity of labor and help women to think that honest self- support is honorable and praiseworthy, is the chief aim of the Society. Since no one will be helped with money, it can, therefore, in no wise be considered a charitable institution ; but all who wish to help themselves will be aided in every way to develop their own capacity of labor, and to receive an equivalent for their work.

This Hospital was established and endowed by the late Johns Hopkins, and is in course of erection upon the site of the old Maryland In- sane Asylum. The grounds front on Broadway and Wolfe streets, each 650 feet ; and on Monu- ment and Jefferson streets, each 900 feet.


This Hospital will be for the reception and treatment of the sick and injured, free of charge, and is designed to accommodate 300 persons. It is richly endowed, and promises to be one of the largest and best hospitals in our country.


There is to be a convalescent hospital and a training school for nurses, established by the same benefactor, under same Board of Trustees. Officers and Board of Truseees. Francis T. King, President.
