INSTRUCTIONS TO TELEPHONE USERS (College Extension -- 81511)

The following instructions are for the use of campus phones:

(1) If you are not sure of the number, please look it up in this directory.

(2) To call a particular person, please use the individual's number rather than calling the depart- mental office.

(3) TO MAKE ANY TYPE OF CALL, first remove the receiver from the hook, listen for the dial tone, (a humming sound) then dial desired number. The ringing signal (an intermittent burring sound) or busy signal (a rapid buzz-buzz sound) should be heard after you have finished dialing the number.

(4) In case of a cut off, both parties should hang up and the calling party should repeat the call.

(5) If an error is made in dialing, hang up the receiver momentarily, listen for the dial tone, and dial the correct number.

(6) TO CALL OUTSIDE LOCAL NUMBERS, Dial figure "9" which will connect your extension to an outside line and upon hearing the central office dial tone you may dial the desired number. (Exam- ple -- Dial 9 then 89384.)

(7) TO PLACE A LONG DISTANCE CALL for College business dial the figure "0". This will con- nect you to an attendant at your switchboard. For long distance personal calls, please use pay stations.

(8) TO REPORT TELEPHONE TROUBLE, Dial "0" and give the report to the attendant.

INCOMING CALLS

(1) Please answer telephone promptly.

(2) Answer with your name or that of your office or department.

(3) If a call is received through mistake, for an individual on some other line, find out if the party is calling from "off-campus" or within the College System. If from the "outside," the call should be transferred to the proper extension by flashing the campus attendant. If from within, ask the calling party to redial the correct number.

BUILDINGS AND UTILITIES SERVICE

The Buildings and Utilities Service Department (Dial 471) is open daily for maintenance calls from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. daily and on Sundays and holidays, please Dial "0" for main- tenance service.
