This band, organized in 1875-more than forty years ago-was for years one of the best in the State. Its uniforms and instruments were the finest in Michigan. Several of the members still reside here. The leader, Louis M. Hoefler, at that time a hustling Coldwater tradesman, is now one of the lead- ing lawyers of San Francisco.

1917-Jan. 3, Mrs. Sophia Upson Pratt died, aged 86. Jan. 24, Henry C. Whitley, aged 78, died from burns sustained in his home. Feb. 15, Company A returned home; they had left for the Mexican border June 24. March 13-24, Schools, churches, lodges, etc., closed on account of diphtheria. April 6, War on Germany declared. May 6, First Sunday movies. June 7, High school 50th annual commencement; 51 graduates. June 19, Albert J. Dorrance died, aged 60. The city purchased a modern auto fire truck: price, $3,475. July 5, Mrs. Cecilia B. Bingham, aged 88, fatally injured by be- ing run over by an auto. July 18, Public demonstration for Company A; im- pressive parade, several bands; estimated crowd, 20,000; proceeds for Company A, $1,683, 77; cornerstone for new $45,000 armory laid. July 20, First draft of men for German war. July 24, Company A mustered into United States service. Aug. 5, Elwin E. Funk died, aged 39. Aug. 7, Mrs. L. E. Rose died, aged 70. Aug. 15. Company A entrained for Grayling. Aug. 17, Willis E. Hodgman died, aged 45. Sept. 3, Mrs. Nancy A. Searing died, aged 97; she was the old- est resident of the city. Sept. 12, Sheriff George W.
