Moses Goodrich had lost his first wife before
coming West and in the spring of 1836 he sent for his son and daughter to join him in the new home. He settled on section 29, Atlas Township, and having cleared up the farm went to work to de- velop and cultivate it. He cheerfully under- went the usual lundships of pioncer life. The following winter he returned East, and on his journey back to Michigan, which took thirteen days in a sleigh drawn by oxen, he was accompanied by his brother Levi Goodrich.
The father of our subject was twice married and three of his children now survive, namely: George, Eugene and Nelson. He was one of the first to serve as Highway Commissioner of Atlas Town- ship, and was a sturdy pioncer and a great worker. In his political views he was a Democrat and was active in promoting the best interests of the county. In his death which took place, September 10, 1887 this section of Michigan sustained a real
Eugene Goodrich had his early training in Atlas Township and from early youth has been engaged in farming. He did much severe pioneer work. He received a common-school education which prepared him for the thorough course of reading which he has kept up all through his career. He' was married September 22, 1865 to Rosa Mills, who became the mother of live children, namely: Edward, Florence E., Rosa (deceased), JJ. Archer and Frederick. The mother of these children was called from earth's activities in 1871.
The present Mrs. Goodrich who became the wife of our subject, December 22, 1875, bore the maiden name of India Maish. She was born in Lexington, Ky., October 12, 1811, and is a daughter of Fred- erick and Sarah A. ( Dedrick) Maish. Her father was a native of Tuscarawas County, Ohio, and the mother was born in I'tien, N. Y. She was carly orphaned by the death of her father and when nine years old she came with her mother and other members of the family to Michigan and for a num- ber of years resided in Oakland County.
The Democratic party has in its principles and poley always conunanded the respect and adher- ance of Mr. Goodrich. He owns a fine farm of two hundred and forty-two acres of land which is among the best in Atlas Township. His thorough

integrity and ability have secured for him the esteem and confidence of the business community, und in social life he and his good wife are active and honored. In seeking for a name for the now thriving and busy village of Goodrich, the family of our subject was not overlooked, and indeed it mny be truly said that its members were the found- or- of that place.
IL.LIAM J. SPEER, whose tine estate is located on section 30, Montrose Township, Girnesee County, was born in Muskingum County, Ohio, February 19. 1811. That contin- ned to be his home until December, 1869, when he came to tienese County and settled on section 31 of this township. His early training was taken upon a farm in Ohio, and while living there he pursued agriculture, but since coming to Michigan he has followed lumbering to some extent, but has never given up farming. He bought sixty-nine neres of wild land, and besides his Montrose prop- erty owns forty acres in Maple Grove Township, Saginaw County. Upon his home farm he has erected excellent buildings, which are truly an or- nament to the township, and are most comfortable und commodious for his family and farm opera- tions.
Mr. Spver was married in Maple Grove Town- ship, Saginaw County, this State, June 16, 1874, to Miss Alida Reed, who was born in Rensselaer County, N. Y., and was three years old when her parents brought her to Michigan. She is now the mother of two children: Helena M. and James E.
For five years Mr. Speer has held the office of Su- pervisor of his township and has been Treasurer for two years. He has been Census Enumerator of Montrose Township for the tenth and eleventh census, and has taken an netive part in political affairs, being a stauch Republican.
Our subject enlisted in the spring of 1861 in Company K, One Hundred and Fifty-ninth Ohio Infantry for one hundred days' service and was in the battle of Monocney, in July. 1861. He has taken an active part in religious work and is a
member of the Protestant Methodist Church, mid ha- served that body as Class-Leader, Stewurd and Trustee, and has been made delegate to the General Conference and other important religious gather- ing ..
Robert W. Speer, the father of our subject, was united in marriage with Sarah Jamison, who died in the spring of 1882. The father still lives in Muskingum County, Ohio, on the farm on which W. .. Speer was born; he is eighty-five years old and a member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church. The father of Mrs. William .I. Speer was William 11. Reed, and her mother was known in maidenhood as Jane Chamberlin. She died in Montrose Township, October 21, 1891, and her father lives in Owosso with his son Charles Reed. Mrs. Speer is a lady of more than ordinary ability, culture and amiability, and makes a delightful home for her family. The farm has upon it excel- lent buildings and everything is kept in such order as to show plainly the hand of a genuine system- atic farmer.
OHN SHERIDAN, whose pleasant home is in Thetford Township, Genesee County, is a native son of Michigan as he was born in East Saginaw, August 3, 1851, and is n sou of Michael and Margaret (Gilmore) Sheridan. His parents were both born and reared in Ireland and his father was by occupation a farmer. The son had no educational advantages other than those received in the common district school, but he availed himself so well of these as to give himself a good preparation for the active duties of life.
It was in 1857 that the father of our subject came to Genesee County and located in the town- ship where his son now resides. John remained at home assisting his parents and devoting his ener- gies to the development of the farm until he reached the age of eighteen, when he began for himself as a farmer in this township.
The marriage of our subject which took place February 25, 1873. united him with Wealthy An- drews, who was born in Canton Township, Wayne

County. Three children came to brighten their home, dennie, who was born December 9, 1871; Jessie, born August 19, 1876, and Mark, January 19, 1878. They are all living and are bright and active young people perfecting themselves in their education and taking a part in the social life of the neighborhood.
The eighty-nere farm which Mr. Sheridan op- crates, belongs to his wife, and about half is under the plow. Farming and stock-raising have been his occupations through life and in them he has been successful. His political opinions have led him to embrace the doctrines of the Democratic party and to interest himself in its success, and his fellow-citi- zens have placed him in the office of School Di- rector, which position he has held for six years, and for three years he has been Moderator of the School Board. Our subject is a member of the Alliance and belongs to the Patrons of Industry. Throughout his life he has taken more than an or- dinary interest in school matters and is always ready to devote time and energy to developing the schools of the township, and making them what they should be. He and his family are highly es- termed by their neighbors and his reputation for integrity and fair dealing gives him a genuine popularity.

G FORGE S. HEMINGWAY is a farmer of Hadley Township. Lapeer County. He was born in this township, where he still re- sides, his natal day being December 29, 1813. He was the third in order of birth in a family of six chil- dren born to George F. and Sarah A. (Flint) Hem- ingway, who were natives of Steuben County, N. Y. Our subject's father was one of the sturdy long-lived race and his father, James Hemingway, who was a native of New York, came to Michigan in 1837, and located in the township wherein our subject now lives. He was a minister of the Moth- odist Episcopal Church and preached the first ser- mon ever delivered in what is now Hadley Town- ship. The edilive in which the sermon was preached i> now an old barn on the farm owned by Frank Hadley on section 11.
James Hemingway was engaged in ministerial work from the time he was thirty years of age until he was ninety, preaching his last sermon on his ninetieth birthday. Om subject's father was a wagon-maker by trade, although he afterward became a carpenter. He then took up the study of law and began to practice his profession. He was sent to the Legislature from Midland County, this State, and was afterward elected Prosecuting Attorney of the same county where he now re- sides.
George Hemingway grew to manhood in the county where he now lives, and on the breaking out of the war, in May. 1861, he enlisted in Bat- tery A, First Michigan Light Artillery, and served for three years. He first went to West Virginia and took part in many battles. He was present at the engagements at Elk Water, at Rich Mountain and in numerous encounters. He was then trans- ferred to the Army of the Cumberland, and in that division participated in the battles of Stone River, Perryville, Chickamauga and Resaen, besides vari- ouls minor engagements, After a service which was prolonged three years, he returned home and has been actively engaged in farming ever since. He is the owner of one hundred and forty acres of good land which yields him a good income.
Our subject was married, December 25, 1866, to Mmy E., daughter of Robert Davenport. From this marriage five children have been born, fom girls and one boy. Their names are: Delia, Earl, Ada. Mabel and Ella. Politically Mr. Hemingway is a Prohibitionist, while in their religious prefer- once the family are members of the Baptist Church.
OUN MOKERCHER. Retired from active business, our subject is at present County Superintendent of the Poor. He is also Secretary of the School Board, having or- copied that position for three years. Mr. Me- Kercher was born in Livingston County, N. Y., January 1. 1x10, and is the son of Daniel and Florence (Mel'andlich) Mekercher, the father being a farmer.
When four years old our subject was brought

to Flint by his parents, the senior Mr. MeKercher having located one hundred and sixty neves of land southwest of the city of Flint. The land was in its primitive state, there not even being roads cut through, and our subject well remem- bers the trying times of that period. The father remained on this place for thirty years; the mother died when our subject was twelve years old. Dan- iel MeKercher was Clerk of Flint Township und was respected wherever known.
Our subject was given the advantages of a very good education which, with the training he re- ceived on the farm, enabled him to make a good start for himself. He apprenticed himself to learn the trade of a carpenter and joiner, and was very successful in his work in this county. Upon the outbreak of the Civil War Mr. MeKercher enlisted in Company B, First Michigan Engineers, and was assigned to the Army of the Cumberland, but afterward was changed to the Army of the Ten- nessee. He saw much active fighting, having par- ticipated in the battles of La Vergne, Tenn., Look- ont Mountain, Missionary Ridge and many others, and after a brave and loyal service of three years was discharged.
After his return from the army Mr. MeKercher
again located in Flint and followed his trade a few years, when he entered the carpenter depart- ment of the Deaf Institution, remaining there for a term. In 1×3 be opened a general merchandise store in New Lothrop, Shuwasco County, con- ducting the same for two years, when he again re- turned to Flint and engaged in the same business for two yens more. Our subject was then elected City Treasurer, and having a good opportunity to dispose of his business he did so and served his city two terms in the above-named office, giving satisfaction to all. Previous to this time he acted as Supervisor of his ward for two years. Socially he is identified with Genesee Commandery, K. T., No. 15, is the present Master of Flint Lodge, No. 23, High Priest of Washington Chapter, No. 15, and Thrice Illustrious Master of Flint Council, No. 56.
John MeKercher was married, January 11, 1867, to Miss Matilda E., daughter of the Hon. R. P. Atkin. Mr-, MeKercher was born in flint Town- ship December 21, 1817. They have become the parents of one child, a daughter, Grace I. Both our subject and his wife are prominent members of the Episcopal Church and are most highly re- spected residents of Flint.
