COL. FENNS REGT. STATE MILITIA, CO. A

Letter requesting that the men from Col. Fenns commanc be permitted to return to their homes and attend their farms. MO State Archives, RG133-374. folder 1 location 25a/6/1.

Ecnhomme St. Louis Co. MO Sect. 25th 1862 TO: The Right Honorable Hamilton R. Gamble Governor of the State of Missouri Sır:

We the undersigned members of company A of Col. Fenns regiment of the state militia now encamped at Manchester MO. co most respectfully anc earnestly petition your excellency to permit us to go to our nomes and attend to ou' croinary business meeting three or four times a week for the purposes of orifi. ready and willing to go when our services are needed and we are called upon by the state. We make this petition for the following reasons. The greater portion of our company are mechanics of Farmers. Who have land rented for which we will not be able to pay. since how that it is time to put in our crops our farms are going to waste for the want of our labor. neither will we be able to pay the tard for which our country calls on us that the rebellion may be put down. Now Sir we have been quartered here in Manchester to R one month and as far as we car see have done our country no good while on the other hand we experience considerable loss by - and we think that until we are called ente active service. We could attend to our ordinary business and keep ourselves just as we'' posted in militar, tactics as we do here. And we would further state that there is here no provision made for us in case any of us are sick, there being no physician, surgeon, or any medicines in our camp and that our wives and children are helpless at home by themselves. and must soon come to destitution for the want of our care and as long as we are doing cur country no good we are not at all willing that this should be the case. For these reasons we earnestly Respectfully Esan Griffit August Hill petition your excellency and sign ourselves. Fredrich Eberwein Christian Burkhardt
