PREFACE.

The date on several of the early gravestones in the Baptist burying ground at Dividing Creek would indi- cate that it was used for burials before the Revolution- ary war.

The custom of burying on private grounds was not uncommon and doubtless many of the early residents were laid to rest in unmarked graves on their own estates. So too, in this old yard were many burials un- recorded, some unmarked, save for rough native stones.

This burying ground is still used for interments, and the inscriptions contained herein were copied from the early stones, and are mostly of persons born previous to 1800.

It is difficult to entirely avoid errors in transcribing names and dates from the old weather worn stones, and it is not unlikely one or more mistakes may be found in this record.

Sixty copies only, of these "Inscriptions" have been printed.

FRANK D. ANDREWS. MARCH 2, 1916.

VINELAND, NEW JERSEY.

Erratum .- For Dolles, read Dallas.

HISTORICAL SKETCH.

Dividing Creek, a village in the township of Downe, which until 1772, formed part of Fairfield, is about fif- teen miles south-east from Bridgeton; the County seat of Cumberland County, and can be reached by trolley.

It takes its name from the creek formed from sever- al small streams which here unite flowing into Maurice River Cove, on Delaware Bay.

A settlement was made in this vicinity as early as 1749 when the families of Jonadab, Thomas, Temperance and Ann Shepherd, William Dallas, William and Patience Paulin removed from Cohansey, with others from Cape May. The pastors of these places occasionally visited and preached to them.

In the summer of 1760 Rev. Samuel Heaton and John Terry removed from Cape May and located in this neigh- borhood. Mr. Heaton's wife was Abbey Tuttle, who became the mother of ten children. These married into the families of the Clarks, Colsons, Cooks, Garrisons, Johnsons, Kelseys, Lores, Reeves and Terrys, names now borne by their descendants.

A lot was donated by Seth Lore in 1751, and a small church, probably of logs, erected. This church was duly constituted a regular Baptist Church, May 30, 1761. Rev. Samuel Heaton was the first settled pastor and continued to hold the position until his death Sep- tember 26, 1777, at the age of sixty-six years.

It was during Mr. Heaton's pastorate that the church was destroyed by fire. In 1771 it was replaced by anoth- er building, twenty-two by thirty feet in size.

4

April 21, 1821, after fifty years of service, the church was accidentally burned. A new building, thirty-four by forty was dedicated in 1823. It was enlarged in 1860.

The ground for the parsonage was donated in 1850.

Rev. Peter Peterson Vanhorn became pastor of the church in 1779 continuing for four years when he re- signed, removed to Salem, and there died, September 10, 1789, in his seventy-first year. Rev. William Lock succeeded him in the spring of 1785, the following Sep- tember he died, Rev. John Garrison, a son-in-law of Mr. Heaton, took pastorial charge September 8, 1787. He died in 1790. Rev. Garner A. Hunt served the church from November, 1792, until 1796. Rev. John Rutter preached to the congregation upward of two years before he was succeeded by another pastor.

The following named clergymen served the church during the nineteenth century:
