HISTORICAL STATISTICS.

- -: 0:

The North Reformed Dutch Church of Newark, N. J., was organized by the Classis of Bergen, at the house of Hon. J. P. Bradley, December 17, 1856, and embraced at its foundation, thirty-five members. The congregation worshiped in Oraton Hall from the time of its organiza- tion until Sunday, April 17th, 1859, when its present edifice in Broad street was dedicated. The first minister, the Rev. ABRAHAM POLHEMUS, D. D., of Hopewell, N. Y. called six days after the organization of the church, was installed the third day of May, 1857, in the First Dutch church in Market street, and continued in charge of the church until the 28th of October, of the same year, when he died.

He was succeeded, after the lapse of a year and a half by the Rev. HASBROUCK DUBOIS, who was installed the sixteenth of June, 1859, and resigned the twenty-sixth of November, 1861, after a pastorate of a little over two years and five months.

The Rev. Mr. Dubois was succeeded, after the lapse of two years, by the Rev. JAMES DEMAREST, Jr., of Hacken-

4

sack, N. J., who was installed in October, 1863, and resigned January, 1866, to take charge of the Second Reformed Church of Chicago, after a pastorate of two years and a quarter. He was succeeded by the present pastor Rev. CHARLES E. HART, of New York, who was installed the third day of June, (1866.)

The tenth anniversary of the church, was held Decem- ber 30th, 1866, at which an historical sketch was prepared and read by Hon. Joseph P. Bradley, and a financial report by Peter S. Duryee, Esq. Addresses were made by Hon. F. T. Frelinghuysen and Rev. Dr. Wm. H. Campbell.

The following abstract from the decennial addresses exhibits the summary :-

The spire was added and the edifice completed in the year 1868, at a cost of $10,000.

The General Synod convened in the North church, in regular session, June 1870.

5

The entire indebtedness of the church, amounting to $11,000, was liquidated in 1872.

The pastor in a sermon upon the occasion of declaring the church finished and free of all indebtedness, presented the follow- ing summary of his ministry :

Total in communion, May 1866,.

.238

Addition to the members of the church from June 1866 to December 1872, 243

Losses by death and dismission 130

Leaving an increase, 113

Total in communion December 1872, (according to a thorough revision,). 351

It will be seen from the above that, during a period marked by a great and unfavorable change of the population of the older parts of the city and by no extensive and deep religious awaken- ing, our church has grown at as rapid and regular a rate as the most flourishing city churches of our denomination, and has reached a high numerical rank. From 35 it has grown to 351. And it should be noted that during the two vacancies in its pastorate, which amounted to three years and eight months, it received but forty-eight members, whereas, during the period it has enjoyed pastoral care, the average yearly additions have been over forty.

It will be seen from the above that the benevolent contribu- tions for the last six years have been four times as much as during the entire previous ten years, whether we include or not the gifts to the college, and for congregational objects nearly twice as much. Almost as much is contributed each year for foreign missions as was contributed during the whole of the period previous. A parish mission has been instituted, and is in a very flourishing condition.

It will be seen from the above that the greatest economy is exercised in the expenditure, and that the expenses are much lighter than those of sister churches by at least $1500 a year in one item alone. It's own self support has absorbed the smallest share of the contributions, and is met by the annuities and collections, which but partially exhibit its resources. The average of $14,292 85 for the past six years exhibits the power of the church.

7

The contribution of an average of $1 a week per member would result in an annual income of $18,720; or if an average of 10 cents a Sunday per member were contributed in the Sunday collec- tion, we should receive instead of $250 a year, i. e. $5 a Sunday, the sum of $1,872 a year, i. e. $36 a Sunday, i. e. with the pew rents $6,078 a year, for the support of the church alone.

Some gentlemen have already agreed to increase their Sunday contribution to the rate of $1 a Sunday, and some to the rate of 50 cents a Sunday, and some to the rate of 25 cents a Sunday. If this increase should extend through the whole congregation a sum sufficient for all reasonable contingent expenses would be raised.

The church is able to sustain the best appointed service, and to meet all the reasonable demands of good taste.

The pastor congratulates the church on the completion of the structure, its absolute freedom from debt, and the efficient organi- zation and harmony of the congregation.

If the work of the church is properly distributed, and faithfully and efficiently done-if the burdens are equitably proportioned, and the rich will give of their abundance as well as the poor of their poverty-if each member will seek the edification of the church in the choice of officers and the consistory will strive to carry out the mind of the people they represent, according to the will of God, and the people will yield a hearty obedience to the officers they elect, the prosperity of the church will be assured.
