"The General Council respectfully points out that the prestige and influence of the Society much depends upon the enthusiastic loyalty of the mem- bers everywhere to those great principles which . look for origin to American Colonial history. In the multiplication of patriotic societies, represent- ing other periods and having different aims from those for which we stand, it is deemed peculiarly important that every member should possess and should use on all suitable occasions the emblems and insignia of this Society. It is hoped that mem- bers who may not have procured insignia already will do so. It is desirable that care be exercised and effort made by all members to see to it, that in whatever makes for public recognition this Society shall stand second to none."

CIVIL OFFICERS IN NEW JERSEY PRIOR TO APRIL 19, 1775.
T the request of the Council of the Society of Colonial Wars in the State of New Jersey, the Rev. Professor Charles W. Shields, D.D., LL.D., Chaplain of the So- ciety, assisted by Mr. V. L. Col- lins, Assistant Librarian of Princeton University, prepared a list of the Civil Officers in New Jersey from whom descent is a qualification for member- ship in the Society. A like list, with references to the authorities, was prepared by Emory McClin- tock, LL.D., Governor of the Society. Comparison has resulted in the correction of errors and omis- sions. Many names are now irrecoverable, as the legislative minutes prior to 1703 (for the Council of East New Jersey prior to 1682) have not been preserved.
Officers who are not known to have even tem- , porarily resided in New Jersey are omitted, as not having held office "in" the Colony. As the Con- stitution of the Society mentions the office of "Lord Proprietor," those proprietors are omitted who were not of the governing body; that is, for West New Jersey, all except William Penn and Gawen Lawrie are omitted, and for East New Jersey, those only are included who joined in the Surrender, or who are known to have become qualified for a share in the government by the ownership of at least one ninety-sixth part of the province.
The date given for each office is that of the first year in which the office appears to have been held, so far as has been observed from the records now extant. It is possible that in a few cases two per-
75
.
sons of the same name may erroneously appear as one person in this list, who have held the same office within a few years of each other. Variations of spelling must be allowed for by the reader, and also aliases, such as Vauquellin and Laprairie, Dal- boe and Mattson, Michielsen and Vreeland, Van Winkel and Jacobs.
Further study of the subject has revealed many errors in the list above described and a number of omissions are probable. In the list which follows all recognized errors have been corrected, but fur- ther research and work upon the list are much to be desired and happily are now being done. It is with much satisfaction that announcement is made of the early publication by the Society of Colonial Wars in the State of New Jersey of a volume which will deal exhaustively and authoritatively with the subject. The manuscript of this work has been provided by the New Jersey Historical Society and the book will be issued in commemoration of the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the settle- ment of Newark.

I The names of the members of the Assembly of 1697 are known chiefly from the signatures to a document preserved in the Public Records tofice in Lamien. document is printed in Volume II of the New Jersey Archives ():p. 14"-148) ; referer.cc to the original shows that in transcribing the signatures preparatory to printing, sev- eral palpable inaccuracies occurred, as here indicated: Daniel Wills appears as Daniel Mills, Henry Ballinger as Henry Callingor, Richard Darkin as Richard Daukin or Daykin, Hananiah Gant or Gaunt as Hananiah Gam, William Bates as William Pate, Archibald Mickle as Archibald Michell, and Freedom Lippincott as Fred: Jam. Lippin- cott.
The name printed Peter Canson should be Peter Corson. It appears in Volume V of the Proceedings of the New Jersey Historical Society as Peter Causa as indeed it was sometimes written. ridge" makes it evident that the name printed John Jerley in Volume Xill of the New Jersey Archives should be Jobn fisley. " Comparison with the original Minutes shows that the name printed Joseph Keemos should be Joseph Keen.
