An annual. sermon has been preached by some one of our Clergymen, and a collection taken in aid of the society, which to- gether with donations from other sources, has enabled the society to ameliorate the conditions of thousands of suffering poor in this city.
The total amount received from November 14, .1849 to November 14, 1850 was 502 72
Whole amount expended it the same time 444 67 And the number of families assisted (more or less) 150
The last annual was preached the 19th of January, 1851, in which the claims of the society were ably, feelingly, and forcibly presented by Rev.Jona. F. Stearns, in the First Church, on Sunday evening.

One object of this Association is to discourage indis- criminate alms giving. When an application is made for assistance, ascertain the Ward, Street and number of the residence of the applicant. This will enable you to find the District in which he lives, by referring to which you will see the name and residence of the Visitor, to whom send him.

PROGRESSIVE GROWTH OF OUR CITY.
MR. B. T. PIERSON, Editor of the ' Newark Directory politely furnishes us (Newark Daily,) with the following table, showing the growth of our population during the last twenty-five years ; in which period it appears to have nearly quadrupled-and that too by those regular grada- tions that indicate a sound and wholesome progress- There is, in truth, nothing forced or factitious in this re- markable growth. The prosperity rests upon the surest of all possible grounds-steady industry and sound morality. At the present rate of progress-and we see nothing that is likely to check it-the population must approach at least an hundred thousand within another 20 years. For- tunately there is room enough and to spare within our present city limits.

44 THE AMERICAN
Mutual Fire and Marine Insurance Co. AT NEWARK, N. J.
This Institution, Chartered 1846, by the New Jersey Legislature, has been organized ; and is now in successful operation. Insurances against losses by fire and sea, may be effected in this Company on as favorable terms as are offered in any other institution. The charter is one of the most favorable ever granted by the Legislature. The most valuable features of the Mutual principle are possessed by the Company. All who insure are stockholders, and the profits, after paying expenses, belong to the insured.
A fund of $15,000 has been reserved, to meet losses that may occur before the premiums received are adequate to pay the losses that may be sustained.
The Company having been incorporated expressly as a New Jersey institution and to meet the wants of this com- munity, the attention of the public is called to the superior advantages possessed by the company, that its merits and claims may be investigated. For business or other infor- mation apply at the office of the company, 153 Market street, Insurance Buildings.
