PROGRESSIVE GROWTH OF OUR CITY.

MR. B. T. PIERSON, Editor of the ' Newark Directory politely furnishes us (Newark Daily,) with the following table, showing the growth of our population during the last twenty-five years ; in which period it appears to have nearly quadrupled-and that too by those regular grada- tions that indicate a sound and wholesome progress- There is, in truth, nothing forced or factitious in this re- markable growth. The prosperity rests upon the surest of all possible grounds-steady industry and sound morality. At the present rate of progress-and we see nothing that is likely to check it-the population must approach at least an hundred thousand within another 20 years. For- tunately there is room enough and to spare within our present city limits.

44 THE AMERICAN

Mutual Fire and Marine Insurance Co. AT NEWARK, N. J.

This Institution, Chartered 1846, by the New Jersey Legislature, has been organized ; and is now in successful operation. Insurances against losses by fire and sea, may be effected in this Company on as favorable terms as are offered in any other institution. The charter is one of the most favorable ever granted by the Legislature. The most valuable features of the Mutual principle are possessed by the Company. All who insure are stockholders, and the profits, after paying expenses, belong to the insured.

A fund of $15,000 has been reserved, to meet losses that may occur before the premiums received are adequate to pay the losses that may be sustained.

The Company having been incorporated expressly as a New Jersey institution and to meet the wants of this com- munity, the attention of the public is called to the superior advantages possessed by the company, that its merits and claims may be investigated. For business or other infor- mation apply at the office of the company, 153 Market street, Insurance Buildings.
