Why this anciout worthy, associated with the early church, and healing the list of the members of the Committee of Safety for Pequannock township, should not be entitled to a place in Rockaway's roll of honor, may be a question to the general reader. His name appears on many of the church records in the time of the Revolution, in a bold hand writing that characterized John Hancock in the signing of the Declaration of Indepen- dence.
Robert Gaston, Moses Tuttle, Stephen Jackson, brabam Kitobel and Job A !- lon, all of Rockaway, were the first to organize the Committee of Safety of this -- then Pequannock township, in which Robert Gaston was chairman of said com- mittee.
The records at Trenton show that he served as Captain and Lieutenant Colonel of the New Jersey line under Col. (after- words General) William Wieds in the sixth Company, in which Josiah Hall, of Denville was Lieutenant, and afterwards Captain. These were in command of the men enlisted mostly from Rockaway and vicinity at the time of the Revolutionary war.

A good story, illustrating some of the atnusements of Rockaway in Revoltoy ary days was written by the hev. i. Joseph F Tuttle, in his collection Revolutionary Fragments and puiksio. i in 1400. Dr. Tuttle is good authority and he lived in a day when many of the narrators were living eye witnesses or actual participants of the scenes of Revo- lutionary times. He usually penned the sketch while they were narrating, and as the apple whisky at that cay was -fil pure and unadulterated, which weg ;- ionally taken with a reasonhied 4. of wilchance that the storie: idad truc.

this brief sketch find its way to any men- her or relative of the Gaston family. 1 should be pleased to have them. commin. icate any historical or genealog ical is, to further preserve the records of this ancient and honorable wor.by of old Rockaway.
Joseph Gaston, of Scotch parentage emigrated to New Jersey about 1730, and settled near Fromhell, Monmouth Coun ty, N. J. and near the "Old Scot's" church organized by Walter Ker in 16:2. His will dated March 91, ITTY, mentions wife Margaret, and children, Margaret, John, Robert, Joseph Maitha, Priscilla and a daughter who married David Chati- burs.

rdage frequently applied to land holders, may not strictly be applied to this family. There are many old Conger houses, I at- tach the name "old." as but fow are still standing in the old parish of Rockaway. The most prominent, is the old Conger Tavern, built many years before the Ri olution by Zenas Conger, carpenter, located and known at present as the Colwell house. It was a palatial mansion in its day, and it is related that Wash- ington and his staff took dinner there, when on a visit to Gen. William Winds who lived near by.
Another small house at Rockaway on Franklin avenue, was known as a Conger Rouso, and has a date 176S cut upon the stone chimney, now covered with siding of a modern date. Another occupied the spot where the harness store of C. Krop- avzeroski is now located, but the original building, the "house of David" and of Eller Thomas, has been long since toru down. No effort has been made to pre- serve the old land marks, and as they be- rome dilapidated by old age, they become an eye sore to the community and were turn down, to give place for a more mol- Ari structure. There is something in the style of these Colonial buildings, that does not seem to be appreciated by mod. era architects.

Rockaway Parish Patriots
ROCKAWAY, N. J., May 26, 1902.
Editor Record : In the researches of the old families of the Rockaway Par- ish, much valuable information has been learned of the history of the Parish. Pa - triots. In former Memorial Services but two of these have been listed of over one hundred buried in the cemetery. Many of these patriot graves are un- marked and unknown, and I would sug- gest that one wreath of flowers be scat- tered on the old grave ground in mem- ory of the unknown patriots buried there.
They may not have been men of "high degree," but they were among the earliest settlers, hardy pioneers, ar- dent patriots, and good citizens. Of this list two have slight claims as being buried at Mt. Hope, but as their wives are buried bere, we have taken it for granted that they were too. Two whose burial place have been dispoted, wo have placed here on tradition. Teu of these are buried at the old Harriman burial ground in the Parish of Rocka- way. The others from best authority and tradition are buried at Rockaway Cemetery.
In the general exodus of the Eastern and Middle States as many more re- moved west -- which means everywhere and were buried elsewhere, many of these have been traced.
This list includes those who served in the Colonial wars, the Revolution, Members of the Committee of Safety, the 1812 war, and the New Jersey State Militia. The records at Trenton are still incomplete in regard to many of them. and any correctious will aid to their com- pletion.
Let us, in the words of Lincoln at Gettysburg, where highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain." Over 50 of the veterans of the Civil War are buried bore, but few remain. These formed a friendship on the field of bat- tle, to which are linked Love and Chari- ty, this Union has become iusenerable, and should be honored by the citizens of to day. Yours truly,
J. P. CRAYON.
