INTRODUCTORY

FACTS ABOUT RENO

Reno is the county seat of Washoe county, in the extreme western portion of Nevada, extending along the California state line for more than 200 miles, north to the Oregon state line. The city is on the main line of the Southern Pacific transcontinental railroad, distant 243 miles east of San Francisco and about 550 miles west of Salt Lake. From here the Nevada-California-Oregon railway runs north to Lakeview, Oregon, and the Virginia & Truckee south to Carson, the state capital, and Virginia City, the great mining camp on the Comstock; with a branch from Carson to Minden, the trading center of the Carson valley, one of the most fertile and highly cultivated in the state. It also has direct rail connection, through a branch of the Southern Pacific, with southern Nevada and California touching Tonopah, Goldfield and other mining camps in that region. Another branch of the same road, to Fallon, briugs within its trade area the farmers on the Truckee-Carson irrigation project, a government enterprise that has eost approximately eight million dollars and reclaimed 200,000 acres of agricultural lands.

The Truckee river runs through the center of Reno, adding greatly to the beauty of the town. But it also serves an utilitarian purpose. It waters a broad, fertile valley that is thickly populated with prosperous farmers who trade here exclusively. Reno is therefore naturally and inevitably the commercial and financial center, the metropolis of the state. Its geographical position ,in relation to the resources of the state, and transportation facilities insure this commanding position.

The town is Nevada's beauty spot, an oasis of verdue in a wide expanse of browns and grays. It is a community of attractive homes, many of them being really elegant residences. The business district is substantially built, with a number of blocks that would be a credit to a city of several time its size, buildings that are the last word in modern construction. It likewise has every convenience that life in this age demands, an excellent water system, gas, electric light and power, water generated, and adequate street railway facilities. Its schools are its special pride. Here is located the State University, that is doing a splendid educational work, devoting especial attention to the scientific and practical development of the state's resources. The public sehools are housed in buildings commodious, convenient and as architecturally attractive as can be found anywhere in America. Men and women of abilty and experience are employed as instructors and results attained are highly gratifying. Reno's population, estimated on the number of names in this directory, employing the usual ratio in western cities, is about 12,000. At the time of publication, June, 1915, there are many hundreds of newcomers here, apparently with the intention of remaining permanently; so a rapid increase of population is anticipated and probable.

Aside from the business advantages offered, Reno's greatest attrac- tion as a place in which to establish a home and live in its superb cli- mate. Section Director Henry F. Alciatore, of the Reno station, has re- cently compiled and published, under authority of the United States Weather Bureau, a folder giving conditions during the last twenty-seven years, from 1888 to 1914, inclusive. He says that any one who can read these facts and figures intelligently and deduct therefrom correct con-

clusions will readily perceive the superiority of local climatic conditions; that personally "I doubt if a better all round climate can be found on the face of the earth.''

The average mean temperature for these twenty-seven years has been 50 degrees Farenheit; for the months in 1914, which constitute a fair average, January 35, February 38, March 47, April 49, May 59, June 62, July 71, August 71, September 60, October 52, November 43, Decem- ber 27. It is worthy of note that this last December, 1914, was the cold- est month in all the twenty-seven years. The average for that month has been 33. The warmest month was August, 1894, when the mean tem- perature was 76 degrees, while the average of that month during the entire period was 69.

The percentage of sunshine days during 1914 was .73, or nearly three- fourths, which is not far from the average of all the years, though this report does not contain figures for other years. The total precipitation last year was 8.71 inches, divided between nine months, March, July, November being dry. During the year more or less snow fell on thirty- eight days, eleven of which were in January and fifteen in December. The average annual precipitation for the entire period has been 8.59 inches.

1915 Reno Street Guide

EXPLANATORY

Following will be found a complete list of the streets and avenues of Reno. The city has the 100 to the block system of numbering and for the purpose of uniformity all numbers on streets running east and west commence at Virginia street, the prefix E or W indicating whether the number on any such strect is east or west of Virginia street. Streets running north and south are similarly divided by the Truckee river. N or S being used to show which side of the river the street number is on. There are many short streets that neither cross Virginia street nor the river, and of course there is no prefix necessary in giving the num- bers on these streets. Note-The word "Street" is understood.
