RENO CITY DIRECTORY
RENO Real Facts Which Proclaim This City a Modern, Progressive American Community.
Furnished and Compiled by the Reno Commercial Club.
Reno is the county seat of Washoe County and the metropo- lis of the State of Nevada. It is situated on the banks of the Truckee River, on the east base of the Sierra Nevada mountains, at an elevation of 4,500 feet. San Francisco is 244 miles to the west and Salt Lake 576 miles to the east. The Southern Pacific, Western Pacific and the Virginia & Truckee railroads give daily service through Reno. Carson City, the capital of the State of Nevada, is 30 miles to the south, and a few miles to the east is Virginia City, the home of the famous Comstock mines.
Reno was settled in 1858 by eastern emigrants who had started for California, but seeing the fertile lands of the Truckee meadows with the bleak Sierra Nevada mountains between them and California, settled in the seclusion of this valley. In 1869 it was incorporated and in 1901 chartered as a city.

The chief industrial establishments are abattoir and packing house, electric-power plant, pressed brick works, two flour mills, cracker factory and a number of smaller manufactories. It is in a farming and stock-raising region, and is the center of the ship- ping in and out of the state, and is an important distributing point for a vast territory covering Northern California and all of Nevada. It is the seat of the University of Nevada, which ranks high among the colleges of the United States.
The population is estimated at 18,000. The government is vested in a mayor and a city council of five members, all of whom are elected by the people. The principal public buildings are a government building, eight churches, the Nevada State Hospital for Mental Diseases; educational buildings at the State Uni- versity, State Agricultural College and Experiment Station, Nor- mal School, Carnegie Library ,eight public schools and two kindergartens, social clubs, five banks, county buildings, and the Reno Commercial Club.
Reno is a live enterprising city with all modern improve- ments consisting of an electric street railway, gas, water, electric and power facilities; public and private schools, churches of all denominations ; hospitals, Y. M. C. A., theatres, good hotels and restaurants.
Twenty miles to the west is Lake Tahoe, the gem lake of the continent. Thirty miles to the east is Pyramid Lake, a pic- turesque lake situated in an Indian reservation. Two hours' drive to Feather River, situated in the Big Pines of California. One day drive to Yosemite National Park. Bowers Springs and Steamboat Springs are within a few miles of Reno where there is bathing the year round, due to hot water springs of volcanic origin.
Reno is the city with the most enjoyable climate in the world, where the sun shines every day in the year and sickness is ban- ished.
Reno is the biggest little city on the map.

RENO STREET, AVENUE AND ADDITION GUIDE
STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE EXPLANATORY
Following will be found a com- plete list of the streets and avenues of Reno. The city has the 100 to the block system of numbering and for the purpose of uniformity all num- bers on streets running east and west commence at Virginia street, the prefix E or W indicating wheth- er the number on any such street is east or west of Virginia street. Streets running north and south are similarly divided by the Truc- kee river N or S being used to show which side of the river the street number is on. There are many short streets that neither cross Virginia street nor the river, and of course there is no prefix necessary in giv- ing the numbers on these streets. Note :- the word "Street" is under- stood.
