To search for names of people or business, type keywords into the search bar in your PDF reader. If a keyword search doesn't turn up expected results, it is recommended that you also scroll down into the alphabetical listings to search for the name, as the font-reading software is not perfect.
The table of contents below can also give you an idea of where to look within the document for other kinds of information listed in the directory, like street guides and government agencies. Note that the PDF page number and the original directory page numbers are different, because the color-printed advertisement pages in the directories were not numbered.

PREFACE.
IN offering to the citizens of Brooklyn their annual Directory, it seems proper to call their attention to certain matters connected with the public interest and convenience.
When Williamsburgh and Brooklyn were consolidated under one Muni- cipal Government, in a number of cases more than forty of the streets and avenues of what are known as the Eastern and Western Districts, had the same name, and for some reason the inconvenience yet continues.
Another evil similar in character relates to the numbering of the streets. In many streets not only are the numbers very irregular, but two or more houses have the same number.
We have felt it due to ourselves and the public, to notice the neglect of those having the matter in charge. So long as the evils of which we com- plain exist, they necessarily impair to a certain extent the completeness and efficiency of the Directory. They are perplexing to those of our citizens who are not familiar with the localities in which they occur, and to the strangers who visit our city they prove a source of great annoyance and confusion.
And we would here improve the opportunity to caution the public against certain unprincipled persons, who under various pretexts endeavor to get up what may well be called bogus Directories. It is believed that to secure themselves from loss, such parties must either offer to the public a deficient and imperfect work, or they are reduced to the dishonorable necessity of copying from our Directory, about all that is valuable in theirs, in this way avoiding the expense of canvassing. If they cannot, under false pretenses, obtain advance sheets or early copies from our press, they either publish their own production in a state of incompleteness, or wait our issue, that without cost or labor they may appropriate its excellencies.
After several years' experience, and the most favorable facilities for inquiry and comparison, we are convinced that the plan adopted in the prep- aration of this work is the most systematic, accurate, and reliable that has yet been discovered.
And we feel confident that an intelligent public, appreciating the com- pleteness of our Directory in all its parts, will continue to favor us with their patronage and support.
