To search for names of people or business, type keywords into the search bar in your PDF reader. If a keyword search doesn't turn up expected results, it is recommended that you also scroll down into the alphabetical listings to search for the name, as the font-reading software is not perfect.
The table of contents below can also give you an idea of where to look within the document for other kinds of information listed in the directory, like street guides and government agencies. Note that the PDF page number and the original directory page numbers are different, because the color-printed advertisement pages in the directories were not numbered.

PREFACE.
THE publishers, in presenting this edition of the BROOKLYN CITY DIRECTORY to the citizens of Brooklyn and others, are desirous of making the following remarks and explanations :
The Directory of this year contains several thousand more names than any heretofore issued, which is mainly attributable to a more strict and rigid canvassing of the outskirts of the city, and the good fortune of the publishers in commanding the services of an excellent class of can- vassers.
The publishers are aware of,the importance of good canvassing; and if there are any omissions or errors in this edition, they are chargeable upon householders or their domestics, in either refusing to give the necessary information, or such as is unreliable.
The matters of streets and avenues having the same names, and many streets being irregularly and confusedly numbered, after the Legislature has conferred the power on the Common Council of Brooklyn to remove these errors and difficulties, are discreditable to a city that stands in the first rank for population, intelligence, and wealth.
Matters of such importance to the public, and neglects so shameful to the authorities intrusted with the remedial power, demand immediate ac- tion ; and the public cannot expect a perfect Directory so long as the absurdities and impediments referred to are allowed to exist.
In all other respects, no efforts have been withheld, or means spared, to render this edition the most reliable of any heretofore issued ; and the pub- lishers present it to the public with more than usual confidence, in its being as accurate and complete as it has been in their power, and the power of active and intelligent canvassers to make it.
With these prefatory remarks and explanations, it is believed that the Directory of this year will meet with a larger sale than any previous one, and that the energy given, and care bestowed, will receive that encourage- ment to which it is entitled, and without which the enterprise of the publishers in this behalf cannot be properly and satisfactorily maintained.
