To search for specific names, type keywords into the search bar in your PDF reader. If a keyword search doesn't turn up expected results, we recommend that you also scroll down into the alphabetical listings to search for the name, as the font-reading software is not perfect.

The table of contents below can also give you an idea of where to look within the document for other kinds of information listed in the directory, like street guides, government listings, and advertisement indices. Note that the PDF page number and the original directory page numbers are different, because the color-printed advertisement pages in the directories were not numbered.

DRAKE'S PATENT ARTIFICIAL

HANDS, LEGS & ARMS, &c., &c.

These artificial Limbs are a decided improvement over all others, and have received the First Premiums, as follows : Silver Medal and Dip- loma at the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Institute, Boston, 1856 : Silver Medal, Washington City, 1857 ; Silver Medal and Diploma, Lowell, Mass., 1857; Silver Medal and Diploma. Charleston, S. C., 1857; Gold Medal, Baltimore, Maryland, 1857; also Medals and Diplomas at every other exhibition where they have been presented for examination in competition with all others.

The Leg is constructed upon an entirely new principle, and so fitted as to be worn with perfect ease ; can be applied to the shortest or most imperfect stump, and immediately used. A large number are in use, and in many cases other so-called premium legs have been laid aside, and these substituted, to the great comfort and satisfaction of the wearers. The Hand and Arm present a perfectly natural appearance, and are the only ones of any practical utility. Parts of Hands can be furnished, as well as the entire Hand. With it the wearer is enabled to write with ease, to dress and undress the person, to handle the knife and fork, to feed themselves, and perform most of the necessary acts of a natural limb.

JOHN S. DRAKE, Surgeon Artist, 316 FULTON STREET, Brooklyn.

DEFORMED LIMBS.

My apparatus for Paralyzed and other Deformed Limbs, are con- structed on an entirely new principle, so as to have a more natural appearance, as well as being a greater support to the wearer, than the old arrangement for such cases. These supporters are made to suit all kinds of Deformed Limbs. They are so constructed as to hide the deformity, with all the apparatus out of sight, so that the wearer can walk with ease and naturalness of action ; and in almost all cases where the patient is vigorous, they will be brought to the natural use of the limbs, and the deformity will be removed.

PREFACE.

The canvass for this year's Brooklyn Directory, has shown a very different result front that obtained last year.

The canvass last year took place while the Draft was going on, while this year we have not had that difficulty to contend with; and therefore have had but few refusals from parties for information.

We have to announce to the public that this year's publication contains over one hundred pages (which is over ten thousand names) more than last year's issue, and about seven thousand more than the year 1863-4.

This is accounted for from the fact that the city contains many more inhabitants than it did a year ago, and on account of there being comparitively but few refusals, as stated above.

In cases of streets having been re-numbered before the canvass, the new numbers have been taken in all cases where they could be obtained.

The much needed reform of re-naming the streets has been taken in hand by our City Authorities, and as soon as they shall have completed their arduous labors, we shall, without delay, revise our Street and Avenue Directory.

The publishers confidently believe that this year's issue will be found more correct in every particular, than any Directory before published in Brooklyn, as no labor or expense has been spared to produce this much desired result.

On account of the increased amount of matter contained in the present publication, as well as the continued high price of all publishing materials, the cost has been very much increased, but the price of the work will continue the same as last year ..
