To search for specific names, type keywords into the search bar in your PDF reader. If a keyword search doesn't turn up expected results, we recommend that you also scroll down into the alphabetical listings to search for the name, as the font-reading software is not perfect.

The table of contents below can also give you an idea of where to look within the document for other kinds of information listed in the directory, like street guides, government listings, and advertisement indices. Note that the PDF page number and the original directory page numbers are different, because the color-printed advertisement pages in the directories were not numbered.

PREFACE.

Ir has been the constant aim of the compiler, for the past thirteen years, to make the Brooklyn City Directory as accurate and complete as possible under the embarrassing circumstances to which allusion has been made in our former editions.

We think it unnecessary at this time to more than allude to the subject of renaming and renumbering the streets and avenues of this city. But we would say that the public greatly desire this much-needed improvement, and we soon hope to see the matter taken in hand and completed by the proper authorities, in a manner which will do credit to this great and rapidly growing city.

The experience of all compilers of directories is that it is impossible to please every one, and also equally impossible to make a perfect Directory, whatever facilities may be at their command. We pursue the most perfect system known, and yet some errors will occur notwithstanding all our efforts to prevent them ; but when one considers the vast amount of labor to be performed in the short time of about thirty-five days, the wonder is that we make so few errors .! Some persons seem to be constitutionally disposed to fault-finding, from these we do notjexpect to escape cen- sure ; but our experience has shown us that those who contribute most in this direction (fault- finding) contribute least toward the support of the Directory.

We believe that a Directory properly compiled is a fair index to the population of the city. If we are correct in our conclusion, our city has greatly increased in population during the past year, as our canvass for this issue gives an aggregate number of sixty-eight thousand (68,000) names, an increase over last year of more than seven thousand (7,000).

Of course it is apparent to all that this large increase greatly advances the cost of the work for canvassing, compiling, printing, binding, and all materials necessary for the same ; and while we desire to keep this indispensable work at as low a price as possible, that it may be within the reach of all, we find it absolutely necessary to advance the price fifty cents, making this edition three dollars and fifty cents ($3.50) per copy ; yet, so far as we can ascertain, our price is still below that of other large cities.

We would suggest to persons referring to the Directory that there are a number of ways in which to spell the same name, and in arranging them in alphabetical order it brings names pronounced the same but spelled differently sometimes pages apart ; for instance, the name Lain in this work occurs on page 316, the same name spelled Lane appears on page 318, and again belled Layne is found on page 322, six pages intervening between the different ways in which 'he same name is spelled. If necessary, we could give numbers of similar instances.

We take this opportunity to return our acknowledgments to our numerous patrons for their upport during the past and present year, our entire edition for the past year having been xhausted within three months after its publication.
