To search for specific names, type keywords into the search bar in your PDF reader. If a keyword search doesn't turn up expected results, it is recommended that you also scroll down into the alphabetical listings to search for the name, as the text-recognition software is not perfect.
The table of contents below can also give you an idea of where to look within the document for other kinds of information listed in the directory, like street guides, government listings, and advertisement indices. Note that the PDF page number and the original directory page numbers are different, because the color-printed advertisement pages in the directories were not numbered.

Natural Champagnes,
Fermented in the bottle, in quality and flavor equal to the best imported, are ONLY produced in California, and by
I. LANDSBERGER & CO.,
OF SAN FRANCISCO.
These Champagnes are entirely free from the Catawba flavor found in all New York State, Missouri, and Ohio Wines, and possess the delicate grape flavors found only in the finer varieties of grapes of the milder climates of California and France. The Champagnes of I. LANDSBERGER & CO. were awarded at the American Institute Fair, last Fall, the
"MEDAL OF SUPERIORITY " over all competitors.
We find in them the "ECLIPSE" EXTRA DRY
brand comparing favorably with Roederer, Pommery Sec, etc. ;
The "PRIVATE CUVÉE"
equal to Heidsick, Hotel Brunswick, or Goulet ; the "DRY," a rival of Mumm's, and the "MUSCATEL," surpassing the world-renowned Mosel Muscatel. They are materially less in price than the imported, and can be obtained from Park & Til- ford, and principal dealers throughout the United States, and

PREFACE,
"Is Brooklyn advancing, or in a state of retrogression, during these times of business prostration ?" is undoubtedly the question being revolved in the minds of many who have at heart our city's growth and prosperity.
We have endeavored to answer that question by compiling statistics from 1860 to date, showing our population each five years as per census report ; giving in connection therewith the number of names in the Directory and the ratio the former bears to the latter. From this average ratio of eighteen years, we show our population each suc- ceeding year, and it will be seen that Brooklyn has steadily increased in population, notwithstanding the serious depression of business.

The above data is the most reliable to be obtained, as, during the years compared, the Directory has been published by the same parties, who have pursued the same general system of canvassing and compiling-adding such improvements each year as experience suggested.
A glance at the decrease of ratio each year, shows a nearer approximation to per_ fection in our canvass. Indeed, a Directory publisher of long experience has the advantage in obtaining full and correct returns. His work will not be purchased unless it is reliable, and from the fact of his making the canvass every year (instead of every ten), and comparing the new returns with the previous year, we are confident that the Directory is the most complete.
Had we not said so much in recent years of the Bridge and Rapid Transit, we should feel very much like having a word now. Suffice it to add that we rejoice at the steady and rapid completion of the former ; and the steam-whistle of the locomotive on Atlantic avenue is, truly, music to our ears, inasmuch as it means " Rapid Transit," enunciated more clearly than could be done by the Phonograph. But this is not an age for half-way measures. Steam must go to the ferries; by elevated or underground roads, which ?- can best be decided by our City Fathers, after consulting our most competent engineers.
Last year we published our City and Business Directories in separate volumes for the greater convenience of the public generally, and sold the former for $4.00, which failed to remunerate us, and to prevent a recurrence of similar loss, are obliged to increase the price of the present volume to $4.50.
