To search for specific names, type keywords into the search bar in your PDF reader. If a keyword search doesn't turn up expected results, we recommend that you also scroll down into the alphabetical listings to search for the name, as the text-recognition software is not perfect.
The table of contents below can also give you an idea of where to look within the document for other kinds of information listed in the directory, like street guides, government listings, and advertisement indices. Note that the PDF page number and the original directory page numbers are different, because the color-printed advertisement pages in the directories were not numbered.

Condition of the Company January 1st, 1868. Capital Stock, $200,000.00 Total Assets, - 509,684.89 Actual Surplus, 279,160.15
Being nearly One Hundred and Forty per cent. (140) on the Capital.
The BOARD OF DIRECTORS have this day declared the usual Semi-Annual Interest Dividend of Three and One Half per Cent., Free of Government Tax, payable on demand.
In presenting the Annual Statement of the Company, the Officers have pleasure in pointing to its favorable con- dition, and congratulating its Stock Holders, Policy Hold- ers, and friends generally, upon the satisfactory results of the business of the year just terminated.
Extract from the Annual Report to the Superintendent of the Insurance Department :
The Serip issued by this Company, for accumulated or reserved profits, can in no sense be a present or even a prospective liability, except in the following contingency, which is the terms of its issue, viz:
" Whenever the said Scrip Fund shall exceed Five Hundred Thousand Dollars, the Board of Directors shall thereafter apply the excess thereof annually towards the redemption of the Scrip, commencing with that earliest issued."
The Scrip Fund, standing on that condition, is a clear, unfettered, inalienable in- demnity to the Policies-as much so as the Capital.
The sensible and frank avowal of the Great National Board of Underwriters, and also of the Boards of this and other cities, that our Policies on the " participation plan " are better Insurance-worth ten and twenty per cent. more-than the Policies of the Non-Participat- ing Companies (being " iron-clad," as it were, by the large Scrip Fund), has had the bene- ficial effect to largely increase the business and prosperity of the Company thereby ex- tending its usefulness and advancing the interest and security of its Policy Holders.
The Company will continue, as heretofore, to Insure respectable parties against Disaster by fire on the Participation Plan, or "in the Old Fashioned Way," as may be agreed upon. The prompt and liberal adjustment of losses, when " fair and square," will also continue the speciality of the Company.

PRICE, $4.00.
Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year one thousand eight hundred and sixty-eight, BY LAIN & COMPANY,

PRESS OF WYNKOOP & HALLENBECK, 118 FULTON STREET, N. Y.
PREFACE.
ACCORDING to previous announcements, our present edition is issued with the addition of a carefully compiled Business Directory, giving, in addition to the alphabetical list of names, the names and addresses of all persons (in this city) doing business on their own account, arranged together under their respect- ive headings.
We believe the time has now come when a Business Directory for this city is as much a necessity as the General Directory, and we combine them in one volume that it may be conveniently and readily referred to; by so doing it also enables us to keep the price of the work at a lower figure than if we issued each separately.
The Street Directory has been revised, and gives the numbers of the corner houses more correctly than formerly ; but as there are a large number of houses which have no number, it is impossible to give the corner number in every instance.
It is not our desire to complain or find fault, but there are some of our citizens who might aid in rendering the Directory more perfect by giving our canvassers the proper information, instead of telling them to take it from the sign or door-plate, and in some instances refusing to give any information.
We have spared neither expense, labor, nor pains to have this issue as complete and correct in every respect as possible.
The extra expense attending the compiling and printing of the Business Directory renders it absolutely necessary to increase the price of the work; but as we desire to have it kept as low as possible, the advance will be only fifty cents per copy. When it is considered how much additional information is furnished in the Business Directory, this small advance is certainly reasonable
We take this opportunity to thank our patrons for their support, and are glad to know that our effors to secure a reliable Directory are appreciated.
