To search for specific names, type keywords into the search bar in your PDF reader. If a keyword search doesn't turn up expected results, it is recommended that you also scroll down into the alphabetical listings to search for the name, as the text-recognition software is not perfect.
The table of contents below can also give you an idea of where to look within the document for other kinds of information listed in the directory, like street guides, government listings, and advertisement indices. Note that the PDF page number and the original directory page numbers are different, because the color-printed advertisement pages in the directories were not numbered.

PREFACE.
Our eighteenth volume is herewith published at the usual time, and on account of the large increase of names, has obliged us to make great efforts to publish thus early. Each year we have increased our facilities, in order that the work might not be delayed, until we now employ three times as many agents and compilers as we had in our first year of publication, 1857.
Our greatest difficulty is not to gain time, but accuracy. We might compile in half the time we now take, but the work cannot be performed so rapidly without increasing the probability of errors. Could we have twice as much time as we now use, the Directory could be made much more complete in every respect. While we would not try to hide any shortcomings of our own, we can safely refer many of the errors that are made to a lack of public spirit, that leads people to shirk their duties to the law in every possible way. To such an extent have we been annoyed by persons refusing information, that this year, for the first time, we publish a list showing where information has been refused. This list will be continued each year. It does not show one-fourth of the refusals, as we have obtained the names of many, even though they attempted to thwart our efforts.
Could we accomplish our wishes, we would have the Legislature pass a law making it com- pulsory to give information for the Directory .. There is as much need for it to be complete as there is for a census to be perfect.
The City authorities have in hand the matter of renaming the duplicate streets. This should be done thoroughly, to avoid confusion to the post-man, and utter dismay to the visitor to the City. We suggest that the same name should never occur but once. There is a Union St., Union. Ave., Union Court, Union Lane and Union Place; and about seventy other similar instances ' occur. We would respectfully urge our City fathers to re-christen these streets and avenues, so that they can tell their dear children apart. Our magnificent city is growing so rapidly, and we have such a splendid area for spreading out, that when the time comes for annexation to New York, Brooklyn will have so far exceeded her sister city in population that the consolidated city may be rightfully called Brooklyn.
Let our municipal reformers be patient. Brooklyn's future is greater than their fondest dreams conceive. If they will go kite flying, let them not make Brooklyn the tail. If they wish to make their City great, they can bring their business this side of the river, where foreign and inland commerce can easily shake hands, and manufacturers find ample room and low rents.
To accommodate the public, we have removed our office to 323 Washington St., next to the Post Office, where we have on file the Brooklyn Directory, from 1840 to date ; and Directories of the principal cities of the United States, which may be referred to without charge. We shall, during the year, also obtain Directories of the principal European and Canadian cities.
To such an extent have the business public been swindled by paying in advance for names in capitals, &c., that we have decided to collect no money in advance. Our patrons in future may wait until they see their names in type, and the Directory published before they pay, however small the amount may be. If an agent asks for money in advance, put him down as a swindler.
We thank those who have patronized our advertising pages. It is gratifying to observe that our important spaces are being filled by Brooklyn firms.
In consequence of the addition to the work of over 23,000 names in the past four years, during which time the price has been $4.50, we are obliged to charge a small advance, and this year the price will be $5.00.
The following shows the number of names under each letter :

CAUTION !
Beware of Swindlers and Bogus Agents !
In consequence of the numerous cases of fraud prac- tised on our patrons by bogus agents collecting money in advance to insert names in capitals, etc., we give notice that hereafter our agents will not collect money in advance of publication, however small the amount. Our patrons are particularly cautioned to read any order they sign for advertisement, and see that it is made payable to LAIN & Co.
There are books professing to be Brooklyn Directories, and unprincipled agents will ask if you do not wish to have your business card inserted in the Directory, calling theirs at the same time the Brooklyn or City Directory. They have also often the assurance to say their book is Lain's. This Book is the only one known as the Brooklyn City Directory.
In consequence of the great demand, both in Brooklyn and New York, we have this year resolved to publish an extra edition of our Business Directory. It will con- tain the name of every business firm, classified under the proper heading; a new Map of the City, Street Guide and Municipal Register. Price, $1.50.
The Brooklyn Directory of each year, from 1840 to date, and Directories of the Principal Cities of the United States, are on file at this office, and may be referred to without charge.
LAIN & CO., Publishers,
