To search for specific names, type keywords into the search bar in your PDF reader. If a keyword search doesn't turn up expected results, it is recommended that you also scroll down into the alphabetical listings to search for the name, as the font-reading software is not perfect.
The table of contents below can also give you an idea of where to look within the document for other kinds of information listed in the directory, like street guides, government listings, and advertisement indices. Note that the PDF page number and the original directory page numbers are different, because the color-printed advertisement pages in the directories were not numbered.

PREFACE.
We present our edition for 1879 with the City and Business Directories combined. The question arising will probably be, why this change ? To this, and all similar ques- ions, our reply is, to please our patrons, whose solicitations have led us to believe that uch combination would make our present volume more acceptable to the public, both as io convenience and economy ; depending on an increase in sales to compensate us for our ;rouble.
The increase in population, as shown herein, is not so great as our statistics of last year presented, though still on the ascending scale, notwithstanding the attractions of Rapid Transit across the River. Brooklynites know they have but a short time to exercise their patience ere "The Bridge" will be completed and Rapid Transit fully established, thus eliminating the only objection to "Our Side," and repaying such patience by its healthful atmosphere and its many natural and artistic beauties. And here let us suggest that, now the question of the World's Fair for 1883 is being agitated, our City be the place wherein it shall be held, and we trust ere a decision is made Brooklyn's advan- tages will not be overlooked nor depreciated.
The custom of borrowing Directories has become so general that, though seldom proffering advice, we cannot refrain from suggesting that a chain attaching the Directory to the counter will most effectually abate the nuisance, and compel those to purchase who, if not so ready, are just as able as their more liberal neighbors.
It seems too bad to give such expression, but the public fail to fully appreciate the merits of a Directory, not only for locating individuals, buildings and all points of interest, but as an advertising medium. An advertisement in the Directory brings your name and business before the public for one year at a mere nominal price, possessing an advantage over ordinary advertising in its being carefully preserved with the book, not read and thrown aside.
We would solicit all who have not done so, to consult our terms, which cannot fail to be found advantageous.
This volume contains 125,440 names, an increase of 2,835 names over last year.
BROOKLYN, June, 1879.
