The Modified Plan for Designating Telephone Central Offices

(Effective with this Directory).

The plan in brief

E FFECTIVE with the issuance of this directory, all central office designations in New York City have been modified by having an office numeral included with the name. For example, PRO spect is now PR ospect 9. In the future, as additional central offices are established in the same general neighborhood, they can be given the same name but with a different office numeral as PR ospeet 7, PR ospect 8, etc. The introduction of the plan has not necessitated changes in telephone line numbers.

How calls should be placed

T HE Modified Plan involves only a slight change from the former method of calling from either dial or manual telephones. Calls from dial telephones should be made by dialing the first TWO letters of the name, the central office numeral and the line number instead of the first three letters and the line number as formerly.

For example, if a number now appears as PR ospct 9-5070, it should be dialed P-R-9-5-0-7-0. The inclusion of a numeral in the central office designation does not; therefore, require any more operations of the dial than the former method. In calling by voice, the number will be given thus-Prospect 9 ---- 5-0-7-0. (pause)

Reason for the plan

U NDER the forme» plan of designating central offices, cuch office was given a separate name and ao new central offices were established, new names had to be assigned to them. Jt was necessary that these names be easily read, easily spoken by telephone callers and sound quite unlike any of the several hundred other names used in and around New York City, so that they would not be confused with any of them. If this method were continued, the limit to the number of suitable names which could be found for central office use soon would have been reached.

Advantages of the plan

T HE Modified Plan overcomes the limitations of the former method. It assures an ample supply of satisfactory designations for the large number of central offices which must be added as the public in New York City requires more telephones. The new plan will make it unnecessary for telephone users to become familiar with a number of new central office names each year. It will permit instead a wider use of present names which as time goes on will become more and more identified with their particu- lar neighborhoods.

Personal lists of telephone numbers

You will find it a convenience to use the list of modified designations shown on the following page, inserting in your personal list the numeral shown after each central office name, thereafter dialing or giving the number in the new way.

F you should wish to make inquiries at any time, any of our business offices will be glad to assist you.

HOW TO USE THE DIRECTORY

Sequence of Listings

A telephone directory listing is re- garded as consisting of seven parts which are considered in the following order in determining alphabetical precedence: 1. Surname (or proper name).

2. First given name or initial (or equiv- alent of either).

Names Beginning With "M", "Mac" and "Mc"

Names beginning with "M," "Mac" and "Mc" are placed in alphabetical posi- tion as spelled, the surname, including "M." "Mac" or "Mc" being treated as one word.

Names With Prefixes

Names which are compounded with prefixes, such as D', De', Fitz, L', O', St. (Saint) and other similar prefixes, are treated as one word; the apostrophe, the hyphen, the space or capitalization, if any, being disregarded in determining the precedence of listings.

Initials Used as Names

Initials where used instead of given names precede the given names begin- ning with the same letter, thus the listing "Aaron J." would precede the listing "Aaron John."

Numerals Used as Names

Names made up of or containing numerals are listed as spelled out in full. For example, "2550 Broadway Corp." would appear as "Two thousand five hundred fifty Broadway Corp."

Same Names Spelled as Two or More Words

Names which are known to be locally spelled as both one or more words are treated as one word in determining the precedence of listings. In such cases a cross reference is placed where the listing would appear if treated as two words. For example, "New Castle," see "New- castle."

Single Letters Used as Names

Single letters used as names appear, at the beginning of letters, i.e. "A. Z. So- ciety" would appear at the beginning of the "A" listings.

Business Designations

The purpose of a business designation in connection with a directory listing is to identify the subscriber and not to adver- tise his business. A general characteriza- tion is, therefore, considered sufficient. Such designations appear in the directory in abbreviated form and in cases where listings do not denote business service, the symbol "b" is included to distinguish them from residence listings.

Listings of Apartment Houses

Apartment houses generally known by given names are listed alphabetically un- der these names. Apartment houses gen- erally known by street addresses," for example, "123 Ocean Avenue," are listed in this directory under "Apartments and Apartment Houses."

Abbreviations

Such abbreviations as Chas., Co., Geo., Jas., St. (Saint), Wm., etc., are placed in the same alphabetical sequence as though spelled out in full.

The Symbol "&"

The symbol "&" is disregarded and does not affect the order of listings. Thus "Allen & Co." would appear before "Allen, Geo. A."

Names Which Include the Apostrophe

Names including the apostrophe "s" ('s) are listed as though the apostrophe were not shown. For example, "Brook's Bakery" would appear before "Brooks, C. D."

Hyphenated Names

Hyphenated surnames are arranged al- phabetically under the first surname, the hyphen being disregarded. For example, the listing "Allen-Harper Co." would ap- pear after "Allen, George A."

HOW TO MAKE OUT-OF-TOWN CALLS

Manual and Dial Telephones

You may use either the station-to-station service to Out-of-Town points or the person-to-person service at a somewhat higher rate, as outlined below.

STATION-TO-STATION CALLS

Call or dial the operator and give her the name of the city and the telephone number you want to reach. IF YOU DO NOT KNOW THE NUMBER, CALL INFORMATION (or dial 411.)

PERSON-TO-PERSON CALLS

Call Long Distance (or dial 211) and give the details of the call to the operator. Faster service will be obtained on person-to-person calls if you give the telephone number.

Make a note of telephone numbers for future reference.

Station-to-Station Calls from One Telephone to Another

Station-to-station calls are calls on which you do not ask the operator for any particular person or particular Private Branch Exchange station, for example a call for "Philadelphia, Walnut 1234" on which you will talk with anyone who answers.

Station-to-station calls are handled more rapidly and at lower rates than person-to-person calls. Reduced

rates, generally, are in effect during evening and night periods. See "Evening and Night Reduced Rates" on Page 7.

Charge is made if anyone at the called station answers, and is computed from the time that connec- tion is completed between the calling and the called station. There is no report charge, except on collect calls. See "Report Charges" on Page 7.

Person-to-Person Calls from One Person to Another

1

Person-to-person calls are calls on which you ask the operator to call a particular person to the tele- phone or to reach a particular Private Branch Exchange extension station.

For example, a call for "Mr. Paul Smith at Boston, Hubbard 3340"-or for "Mr. John J. Warren, 463 16th Street, Denver, Col." or for "Baltimore, Madison 2000, extension 41."

The rates are somewhat higher than station-to-station rates but no charge other than a report charge is made unless the desired person or extension station is reached. There is no reduction during evening and night hours. See table at the bottom of page 12.

Charge is computed from the time that conversation starts with the particular person or with some one at the designated extension station.

HOW TO MAKE OUT-OF-TOWN CALLS (continued)

Rates

For rates to Suburban Points, see page 10.

Rates to certain other out-of-town points are shown on page 9. If the rate for the point desired is not shown on page 9, it may be obtained from the Long Distance Operator.

Evening and Night Reduced Rates These rates DO NOT apply to person-to-person calls.

On station-to-station calls where the station-to-station day rate is more than 35c, Evening Rates are in effect between 7:00 PM and 8:30 PM, and Night Rates between 8:30 PM and 4:30 AM. See table at the bottom of page 12. Reduced rates do not apply on calls to Cuba, Mexico, South America or on Trans- oceanic Calls.

Appointment Calls

A definite time for conversation may be specified in placing a person-to-per- son call. Such calls are known as "Ap- pointment Calls." The Company can- not guarantee completion of the connec- tion at the exact time specified. The rate for this class of service is higher than the station-to-station day rate. See table at the bottom of page 12.

Messenger Calls

Person-to-person calls may be made for an individual not having telephone service. In placing the call ask to have a messenger sent for the called party. Such calls are known as "Messenger Calls."

The rate for this class of service is higher than the station-to-station day rate. See table at the bottom of page 12. The charge made by the messenger is added to the Company's charge for the call.

Report Charges

A limited charge, known as a "Report Charge," may apply to uncompleted per- son-to-person, appointment and mes- senger calls, and on calls on which charges are reversed. See table at the bottom of page 12. This charge is to compensate partially for the operating and the use of the Toll lines in the effort to complete the call. In no case will a report charge be made on a call in addi- tion to a message charge. No report charge will be made if failure to establish the connection is due to "Busy," "Don't Answer," "Out of Order" or similar condition at the called station.

Ship-to-Shore Telephone Service Telephone service is available to certain of the larger steamships while the vessels are at sea and within calling range. Calls may be made to these vessels or further information obtained regarding rates and periods during which the service is avail- able, by calling Long Distance (or dialing 211) and asking for the "Ship- to-Shore Operator."

The rate for this service is $21.00 for an initial period of three minutes and service is now available to the following ships :

Homeric Leviathan Majestic Olympic

International Telephone Service

Collect Calls (Charges Reversed)

Upon request of the calling party the charges on all person-to-person calls (in- cluding report charges) and on certain station-to-station calls (as explained be- low) will be collected at the called sta- tion if sucht charges are accepted. Re- quests to have the charges collected in this way should be made at the time the call is given to the operator. If the call is not completed because of the failure of the called party to accept the charges, a report charge will be made against the information secured by calling "Long calling party.

Charges may be reversed on station- to-station calls where the rate is 20c or more. The regular station-to-station (day, evening or night) rates apply, ex- cept that the rate for a reversed 20c sta- tion-to-station day call is 25c.

If request is made to reverse the charges on station-to-station calls where the rate is less than 20c, the calls are classed as person-to-person calls and are handled accordingly.

The reversal of charges is not per- mitted on calls to points in Mexico, South America or on Transoceanic Calls.

How To Make Emergency Calls Police -- Fire -- Ambulance

Call or dial the operator and say: "I want a Policeman" -- "I want to report a fire"-"I want an ambulance." No charge is made for such emergency calls.

If you have to leave the telephone before the desired station answers, tell the operator where help is re- quired.

From dial telephones, Police and Fire Departments may also be reached by dialing directly the number shown on the right. Police Department numbers should be dialed in case an ambulance is wanted.
