Points to which calls should be dialed direct in the manner described below may be found on page 6. To place calls for other central office districts, dial the operator and give her the number. (See instructions on page 4.)
Obtain Correct Telephone Number
Obtain the telephone number from the latest issue of the tele- phone directory. If you can- not find the desired number in the directory, obtain it from "Information" by dialing 411. Consult the directory first, how- ever, as "Information" does not usually furnish numbers listed in the directory. There is no charge for calls to "Information."
Remove the Receiver
Remove the receiver from the hook carefully. If you "jiggle" the hook you may get a wrong number.
Listen for the "Dial Tone"
The Dial Tone is a steady humming sound, which indicates that the line is ready for you to dial. DQ NOT start to dial until you hear it. If you do not hear the dial tone, hang up the receiver and try again a little later. After hearing the dial tone, keep the receiver off the hook until you have finished with the call.
In case no dial tone can be obtained after repeated trials, report the condition to "repair service," using another tele- phone.
What to Dial
You will notice that the first three let- ters of the telephone number you want are capitalized in the directory. Dial 'these three letters, then the figures and the party line letter, if there is one.
How to Dial
Suppose for example you are calling MAI n 5607 :
Place your finger in the finger hole over the letter "M," and pull the dial around until your finger strikes the finger stop. Raise the finger and allow the dial to turn back. Do not touch it while it is turning back.
Repeat the process for the letter "A" and then for the letter "I." Dial only the first three letters of the central office name. Dialing the entire name will give a wrong number.
Proceed at once to dial the four figures ; namely, the figure "5," the figure "6,"
a few seconds and dial again. Make several such attempts if necessary and then if. you still do not get any signal, report the condition to the operator.
Note: When you are through with the call, hang up the ro- ceiver for a few seconds before dialing another number.
Ready to dial "7"-The laat fgute even h example
The dial pulled around to finger stop
To Dial Operator (Assistance Calls)
If you wish to report a service irregu- larity or in case you have trouble iu dial- ing a call, you can reach the operator by placing your finger in the last finger hole marked "Operator"/and pulling the dial around once to the finger stop. Then re- lease the dial and wait for the operator to answer.
Uncompleted Calls
When, for any reason, you do not ob- tain a connection (for example, the called line is busy or does not answer, or you do not hear the ringing signal) you will usually get quicker service if you try the call again yourself at intervals, in- stead of immediately calling the operator for assistance. No charge is made unless you obtain an answer from a subscriber's telephone,
Party Line Subscribers
Before starting, to dial, listen in the receiver to make sure the line is not in use. If no dial tone is heard, inquire if the line is being held by some other party. If no response is received, hang up the receiver for a few seconds and then make another attempt. If, after you dial, you hear another party come in on the line, inform him that the line is in use and re- quest him to hang up his receiver. When he does so, hang up your own receiver for a few seconds, then remove it and dial the complete number again.
To call another party on your line, dial the operator, give her your number and the number you wish to call, and state that it is the number of another party on your line.
-To Call an Extension Station Connected With Your Line
Dial the operator, give her your num- ber and ask her to ring the extension station connected with your line.

the figure "0" (in red) and the figure "7." If before you complete dialing you find that you have made an error, pr if your finger slips out of the finger hole while dialing, hang up the receiver for a few seconds. Then remove the receiver, listen for the dial tone, and, after hearing it, dial the complete number again.
Remember that on the dial letters are black and figures are red. Do not' confuse the black letter "O" with the red figure "0" or the black letter "I" with the red figure "1."
Signals to Listen For
After you have completed dialing within a very short time you should hear either the ringing signal, an intermittent burr-rr-ing sound accompanying the ringing of the bell, or the busy signal, a rapid buzz-buzz-buzz (quicker and louder than the ringing signal).
If, after dialing a number, you hear an interrupted busy signal which sourids like buzz buzz-buzz buzz, it indicates that you have dialed incorrectly. Hang up the receiver, consult the directory to make sure that the number you are call- ing is in your local dialing area and to verify the letters you djaled as the first three of the central office name. Then make the call again.
If you do not hear any signal within half a minute, hang up the receiver, wait

HOW TO USE THE MANUAL TELEPHONE
Directions for placing Out-of-Toun calls are given on Page 4.
Obtain Correct Telephone Number
Obtain the telephone number from the latest issue of the telephone directory. If you cannot find the number in the di- rectory, obtain it from "Information." Consult the directory first, however, as "Information" does not usually furnish numbers listed in the directory. There is no charge for calls to "Information."
How to Place Calls
Give the number to the operator in the following inanner : CAN al 0027 say "Canal oh-nh-two-seven." JOH n 1253 jay "John one-two -- five-three." MAI n 2125-) say "Main Iwo-one+-two-five J." HAN over 4900 say "Hanover four-eight-hun- dred." WOR th 5000 say "Worth five-thousand." SOU th 10267 say "South one-oh-two-six- seveņ."
If you should hear the operator pass your call to another operator incorrectly, - say "No" and give the number again.
If you are calling from a party line message rate station, announce the let- ter of your station, if there is one, after giving the number as above. Example, "Worth five thousand, this is 'J' calling.'
Ringing and Busy Signals
In a short time you should, in most cases, hear either' the ringing signal, an intermittent bur-rr-ing sound accompany- ing the ringing of the bell, or the busy signal, a rapid buzz-buzz-buzz (quicker and louder than the ringing signal). If you hear the busy signal, just hang up your receiver without waiting for a re- port from the operator., If you hear the ringing signal, give the called party suf- ficient tinie to answer, before abandoning
the call. Make the call again a little later, if the connection is still desired.
There will be 110 charge unless an answer is obtained from a subscriber's telephone,
Where' these audible signals are not provided, reports will be given by the operátor.
Other clicking sounds or tones may occasionally be heard. Such sounds, however, are incidental to the operator's work and should be disregarded.
To Call Back the Operator When it is necessary to call back the operator, move the receiver hook up and down slowly three or four times.
Moving the receiver hook, causes a light to flash- on the operator's switch- hoard. If you "jiggle" the hook rapidly, the light will not burn long enough to . attract the operator's attention.
