New York City Central Office Designations

Use of distinguish- ing numerals

A LL, telephone central offices in New York City are designated by a name and a numeral: for example, SU nset 6. Several new cen- tral offices have recently been introduced to take care of present . and anticipated future growth. These central offices, have been given the same name as other central offices already existing in the sanie general neighborhood but with a different numeral. For example, there is now a. MA in 2 as well as a MA in 4. Additional offices will be introduced from time to time to which existing naines with a dif- ferent numeral also will be assigned. . In order that each call may. be routed to the desired telephone, therefore, it is necessary that the office ' numeral, be used in making the call.

Reasons for the plan

"THE plan for having central office designations include both a name and a numeral was introduced in December, 1930, for the purpose of assuring an ample supply of satisfactory designations for the large number of central offices which must be added as the public in' New York City requires more telephones. The new plan will make it unnecessary for telephone users to become familiar with a number of new central office names each year and will permit instead a wider use of present names which as time goes on will become more and more identified with their particular neighborhoods.

How calls should be made

C ALLS from dial telephones should be made by dialing the first two letters of the office name '(which appear capitalized in the listings), the central office numeral and the line 'number. For example, if a number appears as PR ospct 9-5070, it should be dialed P-R-9 -- 5-0-7-0. In calling by voice, the number should be given thus : "Prospect nine-five-oh-seven-oh."

It should be borne in mind that the office numerals are part of the central office designations and not part of the line numbers. Having selected a trunk line to the desired office, operators (you will observe) pass only the line number to the distant operator.

A complete list of all telephone central offices in New York City, with their numerals, appears on the following page. Any of our busi- ness offices will be glad to answer any questions you may have regarding the plan.
