HOW TO USE THE DIAL TELEPHONE
Listening for Dial Tone
On att cala/" remove the receiver from its holder are listen for dial tone before starting to dal. Dial tone is a steady humming sou. Id in the receiver indicating that the line is ready for you to dial. In the event that you do not hear dial tone, replace the receiver on its holder and try again little fater.
Calls to Ciintral Offices Which You Should Dial Direct
(Consult Pages 9 and 10 to determine which central offices you should dial di- rect.)
When you hear dial tone, keep the re- ceiver juof its folder and dial the first two letters of the tentral office name, then the office numera, and then each figure of the line manjher., For example, if dialing FO xcroft 9- 9970:
(1) Place your finger in the opening in the dial for the letter F.
(2) Pull The dial around until you strike the finger stop.
(3) Remove your finger from -the opening, and without touching the dal, allow it to return to its nor- mal p isition.
. (4). Proceed in the same way to dial the kiter O (in black ) and the Figure [ 9-9-9-7 and 0 (in red).

Calls from a Party Line or from a Line With an Extension . Telephone
Always make sure that the line is not "'in use .- " If you do not hear the dial tone, inquire if the line is being held by some other person. If no response is received, replace the receiver on its holder for a few seconds and. make another attempt.
Listen on the line while dialing, and if you hear arlother party come in on the line or hear successive clicks .in the re- ceiver, it indicates that someone else on your line is trying to call. Inform him that, the line is in use and request him to ; replace his receiver. When he does so, replace your own receiver .for a few : seconds, and then remove it and dial the complete number again.
To call another party on your line, dial the operator, give her the number you wish to call, state that it is the number of another party on your line, and give her your number.
To call an extension telephone on your line, dial the operator; give her your number and ask her to ring the extension telephone.

To Out-of-Town Points
Station-to-Station Calls
Station-to-station calls are those on which you ask the operator for the desired telephone only, and not for a particular person nor for a particular private branch exchange extension station. These calls are handled more rapidly and at lower rates than person-to-person calls. Reduced rates are generally in effect during evening and night periods, A charge is made if anyone at the called station answers.
TO MAKE A STATION-TO-STATION CALL, DIAL OR CALL THE OPERATOR AND GIVE HER THE NAME OF THE CITY AND TELEPHONE NUMBER YOU WISH TO REACH.

To Foreign Countries
From your telephone you may call practically all important cities of Europe, and many points in Africa. Asia, Australia, Central and South America, and Bermuda, Cuba, and several other island groups. Rates to certain overseas points are shown on Page 7.
Additional information may be secured or calls may be placed by dialing 211 or calling Long Distance.
Collect Calls (Charges Reversed)
Upon request of the calling party and with the consent of the party answering the call, the charges on any out-of-town call may be billed to the called station. No additional charge is made for this service, except that a somewhat higher rate applies on station-to-station calls where the rate is 20c or less.
The time at the calling station governs the application of day, evening and night rates on collect calls.
A report charge will apply if the call is not completed because the called party refuses to accept the charges.
The reversal of charges is not permitted on calls to ships at sea nor on cally to foreign countries except Canada and Cuba.
Person-to-Person Calls
Person-to-person calls are those on which youtask the operator to call a particular person to the telephone or to reach a particular private branch exchange extension station. Thè rates are some- what higher than station-to-station rates, but no charge other than a report charge is made, unless the desired person or exten- sion station is reached. There is no reduction in rates during evening and night periods.

To Ships at Sea
Calls may be made to and from certain ships while at sea and within calling range. The rate for an initial period of three minutes is $9.00 or $18.00 depending upon the location of the ship with which connection is made.
Additional information may be secured or calls may be placed by dialing 211 or calling Long Distance.
Federal Tax
No tax applies to conversations for which the charge is less than 50c, The maximum tax on any conversation is 20c. Where the charge is 50c or more, but less than $1.00, the tax is 10c." Where the charge is $1.00 or more, but less than $2.00, the tax is 15c. Where the charge is $2.00 or more, the tax is 20c.

We earnestly desire to have telephone number information available for your use in the form most satisfactory from your viewpoint. We aim to accomplish this through the provision of at- tractive Bocklets for listing telephone numbers, through shit distribution of borough telephone directories, jind by means of Information service. We wish, however, to avoid furnishing more tele- phone directories than are needed as this not only, results in ir convenience to our customers but is . wasteful as well.
The maximum of convenience' is secured through the maintenance of up-to-date personal lists of telephone numbers which you have occa- sion to call. Under this plan, the lists can be kept immediately at hand and the majority of desired telephone numbers can be ascertained with the least difficulty.
In order to ineet your requirements, we shall be glad to furnish you with attractive booklets for use in preparing personal lists of telephone numbers or with any borough directory you may require upon application to any, of our Business Offices listed on page 2.
Every effort is made to make the directory as accurate as possible: Sometimes, however, despite this . care and attention, error's occur. Please check your listing and if it is incorrect, call the Business Office promptly,

Apostrophes, hyphens and ampersands (&) are disregarded in alphabetizing, and names containing these symbols are listed as though the symbols were not shown !.
Names With Prefixes
Names beginning with "M." "Mac," or "Mc," or with prefixes, such as D', De,
Fitz, L', O', St. (Saint), etc., are treated as one word without regard to capitaliza- tion or apostrophe.
Single Letters Used as Names
Single letters used as names are treated as words and are listed bef .e the names beginning with that ketter.
Same Names Spelled as Two or More Words
Names which are known to be locally spelled as both one or more words are treated as one word in determining the precedence of listings. In such cases a cross reference is placed where the list- ings would appear if treated as two words.

If you wish to purchase an article or service, look for the heading descriptive of the article or service you have in mind and select the firm you want to deal with from the associated listings and advertise- ments, If you are looking for the tele- phone number of a person or firm
and you know the profession of bust- ness, you can find it easily in the Classi- fied Telephone Directory, under the heading descriptive of the profession or business. You will find an index of classified headings at the front of the Classified Directory.

SPECIAL SERVICES
Teletypewriter Service
The correct time may be obtained by dialing or calling ME ridian 7-12|2. This information is available at any time of the day or night and is provided as . an accommodation at a small charge as follows:
When the call is made from a message rate telephone the charge is one local message.
When the call is made from a flat rate telephone, or from a coin teleplione pr non-coin public telephone, the charge is five cents.
Overtime Charges
Although it is not the Company's general' practice to time all calls from message rate telephones on which the initial period charge is one local message. overtime charges will be applied wherever such calls are found materially to exceed five minutes in duration.
Free Calls
Calls from any telephone in New York City may be, made to any department of the Telephone Company in the City and Suburban area without charge. excepting calls to the Time of Day Information' Department, ME ridian 7-1212.
On all free calls made from coin tele- phones, the coin deposited in order to make the call will be returned.
Displaying Telephone Numbers
If you display your telephone number on stationery, vehicles, or in other ways. it is important that it be kept currently correct. Changes may become necessary from time to time, and failure to make corrections may affect your service as well as the service of those who desire to call you.
Identification of Employees
Every employee of the Telephone Company au- thorized to install, in- spect, repair or remove the Company's apparatus carries a metal badge showing the Company's name and his own number. . Subscribers are earnestly requested to refuse access to their prem- ises to anyone who cannot in this way identify himself.
Attachments
The Company's tariff provides that no . apparatus or appliance not furnished by the Company shall be attached to or used
with any person or persons to unlawfully do, or permit or cause to be done, aby of the acts hereinbefore mentioned, or who shall occupy, use a line, or shall know- ingly permit another to occupy, tise a line, 'a room, table. establishment or ap- paratus to unlawfully door cause to be done any of the acts hereinbefore men- tioned, * * * is punishable by im- prisonmeut for hot more than two years. -Extract from Section 1423 of the Penal Law.
Privacy of Telephone Service
A person who wrongfully obtains, or ; attempts to obtain, ady knowledge of a telegraphic or telephonic message . by connivance with a clerk, operator, mes- senger or other employee of a telegraph or telephone company, ár being such clerk, operator, messenger or other em- ployee, wilfully divulges to anyone but the persons for whom it was intended, the contents or the nature thereof of a tele- graphic or telephonic message or dis- patch intrusted to him for the transmis- sion or delivery, or of which contents he may in any manner become possessed, * * * is punishable by a fine of not more than one thousand dollars or by imprisonment for not more than two years, or by both such fine, and imprison- ment.
It is provided by the Penal Law as amended March 24, 1933, that any person who shall prevent or contrive to prevent the return . of coins to. the or delivery, in this state of any au- users of coin' telephones, or cause such thorized message, communication er re- port by or through any telegraph or tele- phone line, wire or cable, under the con- trol of any telegraph or telephone com- pany doing business in this state ; or who shall aid, agree with, employ or couspire
Telegrams by Telephone
You may telephone telegrains, table- grams or radiograms to the Postal Tele -. graph-Cable Company or the Western Union Telegraph Company. The, tele- graph charges will appear on your month- ly telephone bill.
You may also telephone your telegrains from public and semi-public coin' tele- phones and deposit the charges, for' stịch messages in the coin telephone.
When calling either of these telegraph companies follow the instructions shown under its listing in this directory.
