To make arrangements for or to obtain 'information concerning new telephone service, dial 811for ask the operator for the "Business Office."
To make it more convenient for: you to transact business with the company, your telephone account is assigned to a particular representative in the Business Office whose responsibility it is to Handle all matters relating to your telephone service such as changes in loca- tion, information regarding bills, directories, etc.
To reach your representative. dial 811 or ask the Operator for the "Business Office." When the Business Office operator answers, give her your telephone number and ask for the representative handling your account, as for example : "This is Main 4-9970. Please let me have my representative."
If you are not calling from a telephone within youdown district, ask the operator for the Business Office telephone number associated with your central office as listed below.

HOW TO USE THE DIAL TELEPHONE
Listening for Dial Tone
On all calle" remove the receiver from its bolder anc listen for dial tone before starting to dial. Dial tone is a steady humming souyd in the receiver indicating that the line i,; ready for you to dial. In The event that you do not hear dial tone, replace the receiver on its holder and try again a little Jater.
Calls to Central Offices Which You Should Dial Direct
(Consult Figes 9 and 10 to determine which centrak offices you should dial di- rect.)
r When you siear dial tone, keep the re- ceiver of its Volder and dial the first two letters of the sentral office name, then the office numerarand then each figure of the line number. \ For example, if dialing FO xcroft 9-1.970:
. (1) Place Pour finger in the opening in the dial for the letter F.
(2) Pull' t'te dial around until you strike tje finger stop.
(3) Remove your finger from the opening, and without touching the dial, alow it to return to its nor- mal position.
(4). Proceed in the same way to dial the letter O (in black) and the figures 9-9-9-7 and 0 (in red).
If the number called has a party line leiter, dial the number in the same way, followed by the letter at the end of the mimber.
If you make a mistake while dialing, replace the reciver on its holder, wait a few seconds, and make another attempt. Before starting to dial a second call, always replac,; the receiver for a few seconds

Calls from a Party Line or from a Line With an Extension Telephone
Always make sure that the line is not in use. If you do not hear the dial tone, inquire if the line is being held by some other person: If no response is received. replace the receiver on its holder for a few seconds and make another attempt ..
Listen on the line while dialing, and if you hear another party come in on the line for hear successive clicks in the re- ceiver, it indicates that someone else on your line is trying to call. Inform him that the line is in use and request him to" replace his receiver. When he does so, replace your own receiver. for a | few seconds, and then remove it and dial the complete number again.
To call another party on your line, dial the operator, give her the number you wish to call, state that it is the number of another party on your line, and give her your number.
To call an extension telephone on your line, dial the operator, give her your number and ask her to ring the extension telephone.
Calls to Central Offices Which You Cannot Dial Direct
To place calls by number to central offices within New York City which you cannot dial direct, dial the operator and give her the number.
Directions for placing' out-of-town calls are given on Page 4.
Dial Coin Telephones
The operation of dial coin telephones is quite similar to that described above. The main difference is that it is necessary to deposit a coin in order to obtain dial tone ( indicating that the line is ready for you to dial). If you do not obtain an answer from a subscriber's telephone, your coin will be returned after you replace the receiver on its holder .!!

When, for any reason, you do not ob- tain a connection ( for example, the called line is busy or does not answer), you will get quicker service if you replace the receiver on its, holetr and try the call again yourself at intervals instead of im- mediately calling thexoperator for assist- ance. No charge it made unless you obtain an answer froth a subscriber's tele -. phone.
Obtaining Assistance from the Operator
"In an emergency, or if you have trouble in dialing. « have occasion to report cases of service irregularities, you may call the operator for assistance by pulling the opening in the dial for the. word 'OPERATOR' around to the finger stop, then allo ving the dial to re- turn to its normal position.

Station-to-Station Calls
Station-to-station calls are those on which you ask the operator for the desired telephone only, and not for a particular person nor for a particular private branch exchange extension station. These calls are handled more rapidly and at lower rates than person-to-person calls. Reduced rates are generally in effect' from 7:00 P. M. to 4:30 A. M. A charge is made if anyone at the called station answers.
TO MAKE A STATION-TO-STATION CALL, DIAL OR CALL THE OPERATOR AND. GIVE HER THE NAME OF THE CITY AND TELEPHONE NUMBER YOU WISH TO REACH.
If you do not know the number, dial 417-or call Information. Make a note of telephone numbers for future reference.
Person-to-person calls are those on which you ask the operator to call a particular. person to the telephone or to reach a particular private branch exchange extension station. The rates are some- what higher than station-to-station rates, but no charge other than a report chargeis made, unless the desired person or exten- sion station is reached. There, is no reduction in rates: during evening or night hours.

From your telephone you may call practically all important cities of Europe, and many points in Africa, Asia, Australia, Central and South America, and Bermuda, Cuba, and several other island groups. Rates to certain ove seas points are shown on Page 7.
Additional information may be secured or calls may be placed by dialing 211 or calling Long Distance.

Calls may be marje to and from certain ships while at sea and within calling range. The rate for an initial period of three minutes is $9.00 or $18.00 depending upon the location of the ship with which connection is made.

No tax applies to conversations for which the charge is less than 50c. The maximum tax on any conversation is 20c, Where the charge is 50c for more, but less than $1.00, the tax is 10c. Where the charge, is $1.00 or more, but less than $2.00, the tax is I5c. Where the charge is $2.00 or more, the tax is 20c.l.
